Dash Cam Features Overlap with Car Features

When I installed a dash cam q800 in my old car it was a no brainer. It had Lane departure warning and imminent crash warning and even told me the local speed cameras.

But new cars mostly come with all of that. From what I can tell they can come with every single feature other than the recording. It sounds a bit strange that so many cameras on a new car and they miss this one little feature.

What would you do for a dash cam in the new car? I'm guessing you don't want for example Lane departure warning coming from two devices at the same time it would get pretty annoying?

New car is going to be used for day-to-day commute so he probably does need a cam

  • Was an optional extra in my 2021 Toyota, but I already had a good quality Camera to reuse.

    • what model? I was looking around and every brand said only aftermarket.

Dash cam only needed for 2 reasons:
    1) Use for insurance purposes when in accident
    2) For amusing posts to Aussie Dashcam monthly, or to make dumbass OzBargain posts

Also for recording when car is parked/off :)

Also good for proving you weren't speeding when a cop decides he can't book you for anything else.

What's your game plan with that? Take it to court? I don't think it's straight forward to have it presented as evidence.

        • I did exactly that, used my car cam data, even downloaded the data in points showing exact position and speed for the section where II was fined. Didn't go to court with it but send it to them. They replied my GPS was not certified and not calibrated and would not be admissible in court. I left it at that, but they may have been bluffing. I was very peed off but paid the 80 buckeroos - 10 years ago.

          • @Waltervp:

            This.

Traffic offence trials are conducted in a Kangaroo court, especially when you represent yourself.

Everyone from the security guards at the entrance to the magistrate are working against you to make sure any evidence you have is never admitted.

You might have a better outcome with a lawyer representing you, but that's rarely worth anyone's time or money.

          • @Waltervp: While GPS isn't calibrated, the usual spiel is that they claim to have followed you and matched your speed. They then say 20km/h over the limit. The rear recording can prove they did no such thing, and while you might not prove you were going 60, it should give a pretty strong indication you were not going 80.

If the cop has decided to book you for speeding when hasn’t found anything else, you failed the attitude test.

If they have decided to book you, breath tested you, and that was clean, they say speeding. Attitude has absolutely nothing to do with it.

    • do insurance companies lower the premium when you list a dashcam is installed? if so, which ones?

      • I asked this questions when insuring my car through RACV and they said no it doesn’t lower the premium

You forgot 3) homemade B**gbus vids

  • But new cars mostly come with all of that.

There are still plenty of older cars on the road that don't have these features. I'd just turn off the features on the aftermarket dashcam that I don't need.

    • yeah just wondering if we should find a 'featureless' dashcam or something "smaller" since the whole block is taken up already in new cars

  • Put Q800 in new car. Disable features new car already has. Use Waze on CarPlay for accurate routing and speed cameras/limits.

It would be nice. But then you'd potentially have to rely on an automaker to develop good software for pulling the files out or an idiot proof system for removal storage.

  • I disable unwanted features on the dashcam.

  • Viofo A119 V3 is what you need, or V129 for dual camera

    • Side note on the A119 V3; The front plastic part of the gps module (which connects to the camera) got deformed in the recent melbourne summer streak where it looks like the plastic has drooped due to the weight of the camera, thus causing a big enough gap between the connection prongs on the gps module and camera. Thought id post this as a PSA incase you guys notice your A119 dropping in and out of power

    • Any reason ozb loves Viofo, and particularly these models?
I wondered if a no-screen model would be good. I'd want QHD/4K front and FHD back.

      • They're cheap yet work well. They're not as good in terms of image quality as say Thinkware or Blackvue but they're 90% as good for 20% of the price.

  • Mercedes offer a dash cam using pre existing equipment.

  • What would you do for a dash cam in the new car?

    Important features:

    1. Extraordinarily superb video quality, night and day.
    2. GPS for speed recording speed accurately and location
    3. Small and unobtrusive
    4. Parking mode
    • Is speed recording good? I imagine if you're speeding it won't help you. If you're not it doesn't particularly help you either. Maybe that you have been speeding at another time can be used against you in the current incident.

      • Can go either way. If you're speeding then yeah, it could be an issue but if the other party claims you were speeding and you can show you weren't it'll help. As for speeding at another time, why would you give them any footage other than the incident? Anyway, seems like all the issues can be fixed by just not speeding.

        • True. Tell that to the millions of speeding ticket holders though. Our local artery has gone from 80 to 70 maybe 10yrs ago, but recently to 50. Local 30 areas are coming soon. Speeding happens.

      • Is speed recording good?

Don't know but I find more reassuring to read current speed from a GPS than the car's device.
        And to compare both.
        Just because I can …

Accurately measuring speed does not mean speeding. Two different things.

By the way showing "your" GPS generated speed will NOT overrule a "speeding fine" issued by the government.
As you wisely stated: "speed traps" are here to collect more and more revenue.

Most new cars will automatically brake when they detect an imminent crash, and also physically keep you in the lane if you start to drift out. So I think the car features are better. Besides, you can't turn off some of the warnings that the cars come with.
