  • How does it stack against taste of the wild?

I've done some decent research into Ivory Coat vs Taste of the Wild (and Stay Loyal). I have chosen Taste of the Wild for my younger male and Stay Loyal for my older female. No points for guessing the breed.

I like Pet Food Reviews as a place to start, but I also branch out.

One thing that was consistent in my research was a number of digestive issues for certain dogs on Ivory Coat.

For the price point, Taste of the Wild is very difficult to beat. It has great ingredients and while I'd prefer an Australian product, America's pet food regulations are actually more stringent than ours I believe.

Stay Loyal is a local product I'm in the process of switching too but the reviews are very good and I thought the price was competitive. If she doesn't thrive on it I'll move her to Taste of the Wild too.

      • Thanks for the info. My pup is on Taste of the Wild and he's been pretty happy with it. Guess I'll stick to it

      • Googled taste of the wild and one result from 2018 mentioned testing showed it contained pesticides and metals?

I can't comment on this. I do recall there was a single recall of Taste of the Wild I saw when I researched. I think there may have also been an issue years ago with treatment of the food when it came into the country but that has been addressed.

Overall my opinion was there are many more recalls with other brands. Their ingredients are good and I am comfortable with my decision.

That said if Taste of the Wild isn't for you there are plenty of other decent brands around. Stay Loyal is one I recently discovered with great reviews that might suit. If money was no object I'd feed ZiwiPeak. But it is, so I don't.

I calculated what we spend feeding our dogs ivory coat and it was $5000 per year.
    I have decided to change.

    • How many dogs? A 13kg bag lasts me close to a month, and I’ve got 2 dogs. Admittedly one is a very “petite” eater. The other a guzzler. This “flavour” has been reduced greater than others previously do I bought it; for some reason the dogs did not really like it. And gave my guzzler the stinkiest farts. I ended up mixing it with other bags.

      • A 38kg German shepherd and a 12kg cocker spaniel.
The shepherd is a fussy eater and takes about 30 mins too eat.
He didn't care for taste of the wild.

        • Hey off topic.. but we also have a German shepherd. He would take so long to eat and wife would force him by hand sometimes. It was not until we saw blood from his penis that we found out he had an enlarged prostate.

The first way to fix this was to de-sex him (was 3 years at the time) the other way is prostate surgery. Fortunately he was all good after the first way.

He can’t stop eating now he loves it. Instant change in that and his life still going strong.

Just wanted to share in case this is happening to yours. He eats about a bag a month

            @FreshPrinceofKP: Thanks fresh Prince.
Ours nearly died as a pup, refusing to eat. I think he has some trauma from us relentlessly trying to make him since he was wasting away.

Turned out he had a parasite and coronavirus (similar to parvo in dogs but their immune systems usually handles it) we think he copped it worse due to the parasite.

I'll take him in for a check up though. It has worsened over the last fortnight.

        • isn't Taste of the Wild made from the same supplier as Costco's Kirkland dog food?

    • +2

      I don't even eat close to $5000 a year

    • We have a 40kg German and a 32kg Golden Retriever

We feed them ivory coat.. 1 meal a day 2 large plastic cup almost 3 normal cups i guess… if you feed them one meal a day their metabolism slows down.. they need less food and they live longer with less illness's/allergies/hotspots.. its very healthy for dogs to eat once a day… you can feed them snacks other times here and there..

1x 13kg bags lasts 3 weeks almost 1 month. one month grain free.. one month 18kg bag with brown rice in it

low fat large breed options always ..

Apparently I can't math. Closer to 2k. My excel spreadsheet led me astray

      • $2k sounds about right… I think we spend around $1350 a year buying both the grain free and grain food…

1 meal a day also keeps them pooping less lol

  • Is this any good?

    Free Dry Dog Food

    Not free…

  • One of my dogs didn't tolerate this brand. After Googling others' opinions about it, I have decided not to buy it anymore. I get Taste of the Wild instead, which is made in the US where pet food is regulated, unlike in Aus.

    • I get Taste of the Wild instead

The racoon flavoured one is pretty good.

  • It's the only kibble my dog eats and she's a fussy eater

    • Taste Of The Wild? Kirklands Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato? both are produced from the same supplier Diamond Pet Foods.

      • Googled taste of the wild and one result from 2018 mentioned testing showed it contained pesticides and metals

        • I think a google on ivory coat brings up a higher recall number than both taste of the wild and kirklands combined :/

          • @Beezum: My results didn't bring up any recalls, only product sale pages lol. If I add "recall" to the search I only see the negative feedback results from pet owners over the past year. With taste of the wild, there's some concerning questions under the "people also ask" so it must be frequent

I think after this bag's done I'm going to make the switch to Stay Loyal as someone recommended above, after I do a little research of course

We have never had any issues with this food. Can be had even cheaper when you stack discounts.

    • No issues here as well. My dog has been eating it for years and would have definitely stopped if she had noticed something off haha

Might try a bag of something else next time, know of anything similarly priced and healthy? I wanted to give meals for mutts a go but they had a free sample offer once and never sent me anything
