Slow News Day: Just Quit My Job after Getting into a New Role! Excited!

Remember this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/669973#comment-11634497

Yeah that 'Dream' job earning $42k a year is no more. Told my boss I am leaving, no references needed and thanks for all the overtimes I been putting in with no pay. He was shocked as I was the last person he expect to quit as I am always on time, always the last one to leave. Asked me to stay and he will workout a new salary arrangement. Sorry boy no go as I got into a new role paying $80K a year working from home doing 10:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday, no weekend work (Customer support role, no commission)

Morale of the story: If your current job is not paying well and the boss is an Ahole! Look around and there might be something good around the corner!

Thought I share the good news!

PS: My online fulfilment job is also gone. Now I work for a very relaxing company working 5 hours a day on the weekend on both days. Earning $34 an hour on Saturday and $40 an hour on Sunday. No Commission role but the management is great!

    Good for you.

  • I think this is going to be more common as the unemployment rate heads towards 0 (unless we turn the immigration taps on and destroy any hope of wage growth), which if you own your own home and are happily retired would be a win win.

This is probably the best time to be shopping around for work.

    • Absolutely! I applied for 5 roles and got 4 job offers all coming in the last 2 weeks, in the end I have to pick 2 out of the 4 and these 2 are the ones I decided. Now is really the time to get into something new. I dont think I have came across a time when job seeker has so much choice.

    • as the unemployment rate heads towards 0

Can't wait until we get to negative unemployment !!!

      • Thats when things get interesting
        Start picking up 2 jobs!
40 hour work weeks are for rookies
        80 hours is the go
You do get 168 hours a week

        • I did 16 hours a day for more then 3 years straight. It fkn sucks

  • If this new gig is good for part time people could you message me if they are recruiting, thank you :)

    • +3

At the moment they just finished recruitment but I keep an eye out.

Told my boss I am leaving, no references needed and thanks for all the overtimes I been putting in with no pay. He was shocked as…

I don't mean to be a "downer", but I always tell people - never burn your bridges. lol

Other than that, congrats on your new job!

Sometimes only way to move forward is to leave the past behind………..but i do get what you mean

  • +2

Congrats! I kind of wish you had said to the manager 'sure, double my pay and I'll stay' just to see what he says.

    • +4

Don't need to make promises. Just ask for double pay. If they said yes, ask for it in writing. Share with your former colleagues.

      Then politely decline.

    • I highly doubt he will match my current offer. LOL

      • Yeah it wouldn't be for him to match the offer but to let him know how much you've levelled up, just to see his reaction haha

  • Well done, not every day you can almost double your wage instantly.

Its easier when you getting paid little to start with, it gets harder when you are already have a salary above average though.

    Great news!

I recently made a change myself and am kicking myself for not doing it sooner, so much out there for people who want to work.
I’ve known its a workers market at the moment for a while but was still absolutely gobsmacked at the options and flexibility available when I legitimately looked fir a change. So many employers desperately needing workers.

    Congrats again!

    • Thanks, this is the way moving forward. Dont stuck at the same place.

  • Congrats mate!

  • +1

OP, tell your former colleagues the new pay. You could get referral bonuses at your new company

    • Hmmmm……..thought about it, but I decided not to. Simply because we had plenty of conversations over the last few months and many just worried they wont be getting offers and not even willing to try.

  • What's your weekend job now?

    • Selling small appliances. Toasters, microwaves, kettles you name it.

  • Congrats! I hope it works out really well for you. That change in income should do a lot at the very least.

    • Yeah, no more 40mins a day unpaid work too!

  • Well done, but….. Up your skills while doing this job, customer support is guaranteed to burn your enthusiasm in a few years.

    • Yes, good thing about this new role is they have plenty positions available to go higher, depends on if I want to take more responsibilities in the future or not. I know for certain my supervisor has hinted that after 1 year, if I do well and wants to take more responsibility, money starts with 6 figures and not 5………so fingers crossed

Congrats on your new role!! I hope you enjoy it!

I recently left my job of 3 years, it started out fun and exciting but then they stuck me at a horrible client for a year. The culture also worsened, starting off with a cool start up vibe where everyone is equal and the possibilities are endless then becoming a corporate boys club. There were lots of perks but I recently started a new job paying 50% more. Who needs annual trips and monthly lunches when you can cash that in for ten times as much as it is worth in $. Not to mention I didn't even apply to them, I just updated my Seek profile. 2 hours later I get a call and 4 hours later I am offered a job. Next day contract signed and emailed back 👌

Anyone who is unhappy with their current job should definitely at least update their Seek/LinkedIn profile and see what lands on their doorstep. It could be way better than what they're currently doing.

I concur! I also had 1 position offered to me on the seek profile.

Didn't take it as its around 50mins one way trip which adds to around 100 mins each day, not including petrol. Pay is around $90k, so for a differences of $10k I would rather work in my sleepwear.

today is my last day at my job too

    • Do you have a new one lined up? 😊

      • +1

always mate, more pay, company car, way closer to home.
the job im quiting i got mid dec so it was a bad choice.

        • +2

          Congras on the new position!

  • Henry Ford has a lot to answer for. It shouldn’t be about how long a person works it should be about their production. Pay for production and you get it. Pay for time and you get what you pay for.

    • +1

Then you have to quantify each task, after a while ad-hoc tasks get added and you end up doing more work than you're paid for.

I'd rather be efficient without anyone noticing that I can fit more in my work day.

      • +1

I once had a job that I was very good at but the tasks required were much less than others thought. I got huge bonuses and filled in my day online amusing myself doing shit like this. I always had a spreadsheet window ready to pop up if somebody was going to walk by. They all thought I was smashing shit on the spreadsheets. And that was why I was so productive but the reality was I repositioned the business in the market place and it just took off.

  • Good on you… they exploit as much as they can. They see your loyalty as being a sucker. Just walk out.

    • These days…………just money talks, loyalty has not been in the workforce for a long time now. I cant believe I stayed for this long.
