Asbestos Testing? (and Removal if Needed)

Hi all,

Wondering if anyones has recent experience with getting stuff tested for asbestos?
99% sure our garage roof is that super six stuff, and maybe exterior cladding (don’t think it is, but maybe). It’s got leaky spots, so need to do something with it to stop the leaks at some point…

Wouldn’t mind getting laundry (maybe bathroom?) walls tested too.

Dunno if there are free services available (probably not?) for testing. I think that was only for lose fill insulation maybe.

Cheers

Which state is your property in?

    • Hah that woulda been good to include…

      I’m in western Sydney, NSW.

It's in a poor state by the sound of things, it has a leaking asbestos roof.

I can see where you are going. 🙂
Lucky I asked which, not what!

  • Pretty sure you have to pay for asbestos testing for other than mr fluffy.

Could comfortably assume the roof is, and if clad at the same time, then the walls will be too. Depending on the age of your laundry (pre 90s) it’ll be asbestos too.

The first rule of handling ACM is to assume that everything is ACM until it can be identified by a competent person.

The second rule is to not disturb it unless it's an emergency.

Please link photos of the mats and the leaks.

Will grab some photos tomorrow when I don’t have the kids hanging off me where ever I go hah.

      • .#3 to #7 is ACM.

Can you see any flat-head nails on #1, #2 and is it painted?

        • +1

Yeh was pretty sure roof would be the nasty nasty stuff.

Yep lots of nails, and yep painted on outside only. Have uploaded additional photos.

          • @NoDowt: Ok, thanks.

            All 10 pics are ACM.

            • @rektrading: Thanks for the info. Just for interests sake, What was it from the extra info/photos that confirmed the wall panels?

Now to workout what to do with it… assume it’ll cost a bomb to have removed.

    Before 1980 = Asbestos

    • +3

That's incorrect. It was banned in 1989.

      • That almost guarantees before 1980 will have asbestos then

        • +1

          True but it's still misleading.

Anyway, 1980s is when it started to get phased out. It was officially completed banned in Dec 2003 in Australia. Although, there is always the chance dodgy builders stockpiled ACM because it was cheap and used on projects at that time.

  • We work with asbestos at work, I managed to get mine sampled through work, if you do decide to disrupt it I suggest wetting down the area or material before disturbing it, make sure you've got a P2 mask and wear a white disposable suit as well, most places that as for a sample recommend using a 200um bag for transporting it to.

  • I recently had some damaged hardiplank cladding on my shed tested. Was pretty certain it wouldn't be asbestos because the shed was supposedly built in 1995 and they stopped producing hardiplank with asbestos in 1981 but tested it anyway.

Cost $45. They only need a small sample piece.

I printed the form from their website, double wrapped the sample in sandwich bags and express posted to the lab. Got the results about 2 days later via email. No ACM found

    • Who was this test through? Seems like a good route.
