Ego blower, mower, whipper snipper

Hi all, I have an ego blower with a 56v 2.5ah battery that doesn’t last long (10 mins). We have a large property and have been making do with aldi battery powered equipment, however the batteries are also now degrading.

Is it wise to invest in more ego equipment? I’m always a bit confused about which packages and products are which, and if they’re really a good deal. Is there anything going at the moment for a decent price? Which products should I be looking out for? Or are there better options out there?

Basically we need more battery power, - mower and a whipper snipper. I already have the blower skin. I assume I can do the edges with the whipper snipper?

Thanks!

  • No experience with EGO gear, but for a large property you'll need large batteries, 2.5ah is bugger all.

    • they are 56v, so the watt hour is way higher than the 18v 2.5ah.

I haven't timed how long ours lasts but i can whipper snip the edges, use the pavement edger (massive long driveway), and blow vac in nothing but turbo in one charge. The blower is the hungriest but i (profanity) love it.

    • Need to look at wh (ah x v).

Ego 56v 2.5 ah batteries are 140 wh. That's the equivalent of 7.7 ah battery at 18v.

  • How old is the battery? I bought my line trimmer from Masters when it was closing down, and still get about 40-45mins run time.

    • Same situation with EGO mower.

    • It must be quite old now. maybe 5 years?

Are the battery charges smart or dumb. If the instructions say to connect the battery for X hours then the charger is dumb and the reason the batteries are bad is because you have left them charging for way too long. This will occur with any dumb battery charger.

Make sure you check ANY battery charger before using it as they can cause battery degradation if used incorrectly.

    • Not sure, it's the Ego charger that came with the blower and battery. It shuts off when it's completed.

  • I have almost the full quiver of EGO gear for our suburban 1/4 acre. There is nothing better in the market right now for performance for home use.

Using a 2.5Ah on the blower is barely a thing. Much better performance can be gained from using a 5Ah with the blower. And for mowing you can forget about the 2.5Ah unless its for emergenicies.

The 2.5Ah is good on whipper snipping, hedgeing, pruning, edging etc. Just not mowing and blowing.

Wait for the next battery redemption deal for best bang for buck. And get a mower/trimmer combo kit for extra value. 5Ah and above is good on the mower.

    • Thanks for the reply! Do you know if I can use the 5ah battery with he 2.5ah blower skin? Likewise if I get the 2.5ah whipper snipper skin, does that mean I can't use the 5ah battery? Oh also, can I charge the 2.5ah battery with the one 5ah charger?

      • Yes you can use any EGO battery on any EGO tool and charger. Its just that some tools, like mower and blower, work much better with the bigger capacity battery. Other tools you won't notice any difference in performance from a bigger capacity battery, just more weight.

  • I find the Dewalt range of garden tools to be fantastic. No complaints so far, but then again never used Ego so cant compare.

I have all the EGO gear- Mower, Blower, Carbon Trimmer, Brush Cutter, Power Head with Edger and Hedger attachments.

    WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN.

    Petrol all the way.

why? i just moved from a 2 stroke trimmer? And power is on par, convenience is way higher. I didn't have a petrol blower but did up grade from a toy ryobi 18v and prompted put the ryobi on market place. I have an alert turned on on oz bargain as i am waiting on a special on the mower so i can leave Jerry cans for chainsaw while camping, and even that i could be swayed on.

      • Same here, got rid of our petrol whipper-snipper last year and got the EGO power load one. Only has the 2.5 battery but can get 3-4 runs around the property on one charge. Would NOT go back to petrol if I had a choice.

The ergonomics are shit. The performance of the mower is disgusting, it leaves mohawks, lacks power and as a result you end up having to mow weekly as you can't get low enough. Its variable speed/torque trickery is not fast enough to act on tough sections and it keeps stalling. My 30 year old 2 stroke which lives outdoors in the rain, kicks it's arse in all aspects and its blades haven't been changed in 15 years.

The only good thing is the blower (chews batteries like lollies) and the trimmer/brush cutter.

Huh??? Have EGO mower (2+ years), would never go back to petrol…lighter, more convenient, no fuel storage, mixing etc etc… highly tempted to neg ya, nothing worse than unsupported, direct yes/no posts. The only -ve is that it has less grunt….and that's only a bother if you let the grass get overly long.

      • +1

The less grunt is also a nightmare with the rain we have been having. I need a few days of sunshine to dry it out completely, otherwise the mower chews batteries as bad as the blower and i have to rake the place as it cant pick up shit.

  • I have an EGO self-propelled lawnmower with a 5.00Ah battery and I can mow my back lawns, front lawns, and nature strip on 1 charge and still have power over.

    Wouldn't even try with a 2.5Ah battery.

I also have a Ryobi mower, not self-propelled, with 2 x 5.0Ah batteries (about 6 months old) and I have to recharge them to finish the job and mow the nature strip.

    • I have an EGO self-propelled lawnmower

I looked at one instore… How do you use it without the grass catcher banging onto your shins?

It was extremely uncomfortable to push…

      • +3

Sound like the handle wasn’t fully extended (it’s telescopic). I’ve no issue using ours.

        • Thanks. I'll take a better look next time I'm there…

          • @jv: Yeah its reach and angle adjustable. Never had this problem on mine.

What is this thing you call grass catcher jv?

Mulching plug is the way to go.

    • Mulching plug is the way to go.

Leaves a messy look to the lawn.

      • Not my EGO with the twin mulching blade. The clippings seem to disappear into the ether

        • Not my EGO

I'll try not to offend your self esteem then, but maybe I have higher standards…

  • +1

If you mow your lawn more frequently and keep it short there's less length cut off and less mulch.

It's almost impossible to see any when I've finished mowing.

  • Not sure what's happening OP, most likely your battery is dying. Honestly the ego stuff is very very good (and you pay for it), and falls into the semi commercial zone. There are very few brands better.

I use my blower all the time and it barely makes a dent in the battery. According to Ego you should be able to use it (with a 2.5 ah battery) for 75 minutes on low, 23 minutes on high, and 10 minutes of continuous usage on the rather excessive boost function.

Are you walking around with the boost held down or with it on high continuously? Otherwise your battery may be dying.

Same deal with the line trimmer, which is again really good. Very hard to actually flatten it even with a 2.5 ah battery. Lasts a lot longer than my arms do. I also have the hedge trimmer which is again very good. I have a larger battery but don't bother because it's so very hard to flatten the battery.

The only thing which can actually flatten the battery in a reasonable timeframe is the mower. Since i have Kikuyu and an irregular mower it's the only element of ego's lineup that I'm less hot on. It cuts, but it struggles once the grass gets more than 20-25cm long. It's still a lot better than petrol though and much better than the cheap aldi one I was using before.

    • Thanks for your feedback! Did you know what the difference between the various mower sizes is? I can see 42mm, 47mm and 52mm available. And also is self propelled worth it? I see there's also a 7.5ah battery with one, is that because the mower size is larger? Do the larger mowers require more battery power?

Yes, boost is part of the problem but it's not exactly giving me much power without the boost, so probably a battery upgrade will help.

      • Maybe you've got an issue with the actual blower? On low it's enough for me to blow things a metre or two away. I only use boost very selectively, eg to blow away spider webs or under the car, otherwise boost is too powerful. For all other things I just walk closer. Something is going wrong with your setup, or maybe things improved a lot from your model to mine. I doubt changing to a 5ah battery will give you that much power unless your battery is dying. I only ever use my 5ah battery for my mower.

Honestly I'm just using the 47cm non self propelled. For a lawn as big as mine I think i under bought. It's not bad but i need to mow regularly. I'd grade it a B- and everything else A to A+. I've not tried the other mowers.

The mower does guzzle battery power much faster than the other tools. I think i get about 40-45 minutes of cutting longish grass with both a 2.5 and 5 ah battery. Really how big a battery depends on how long you plan on cutting for.

Generally you buy self propelled if you're on a slope, have a very large block, or will have difficulty pushing the mower, but otherwise it's not worth the run time reduction and mechanical complexity. It does help though.

        • Sorry, that should be 42cm, non brushless version non select cut. The difference is the size of the blades. Bigger means a larger cutting area which means less passes needed and therefore the job is done faster. Obviously bigger cutting area means need motor and battery drain are also increased

  • is self propelled worth it?

It depends. If you have flat areas to mow and the lawn area isn't too big self propelled is nice to have but not essential.

I have runner grass to mow and I've found that if I set a low travel speed the mower seems to give a more even cut without chewing through the battery.
