If anyone has some questions about this, I might be what is considered a rocksmith nut.

    • I think ppl said you acutally can learn to play guitar with this (and accessories) is that true?

      • +3

Yes and no. You can use it to learn guitar but the marketing that says it will teach you guitar is not accurate. There is no reason why you can't learn to become an apex shredder with rocksmith but you will have to have an active part in choosing what you study and work on. It does very little guide you. It's a great tool.

Like a lot of music tuition, a lot of responsibility falls on the person learning to direct their learning.

Really the only way to avoid that is to pay for a guitar teacher who is there with you.. a lot.

It's not that complex, though.. just pick songs that have things in that you want to do and play them. Youtube anything that you don't quite understand and keep turning up and you're good.

    • Can this run with an acoustic guitar and a USB microphone such as the Blue Snowball ICE?

    • Can I run it off something like an iRig guitar interface do you know? I don't want to get a Real Tone cable and I'm not quite sure what is meant by 'with some community mods' (OP comment above).

    • I have an audio interface connected to my PC at the moment. Are the community mods required to get that working with Rocksmith complex to set up and/or are they reliable and don't break down often?

      • Reliable.

Development has stopped on the game so there are no updates that can break it other that windows updates stuffing with it. I know a few people have had some issues with win 11 but it's likely that's more a thing if you're not using an interface.

Not complex to set up, either.

        • Awesome, thanks for the answer. Appreciate the clarification

        • Brilliant. Thanks!

    • Did you know how to play guitar before playing Rocksmith?

If not - can you reliably play songs based on your experience with this? I've been "learning" piano via Synthesia and apparently the real way to learn any instrument is learning sheet music + a tutor + time

      • +7

No, I did not know how to play guitar prior to playing rocksmith. I had played a bit of bass, but I can confirm I was completely useless at chords ant whatnot.

Can I reliably play songs with this? I'm not sure I can answer that. I'm midway through the process. I have 1000 tracks and I can sight read any song that flies at me in rocksmith in real time. Most of my songs are at 90%+ accuracy but there's a lot more work to be done. There is zero doubt that progress is being made though. It's a constant numerical (and audible) improvement. I do not ever spend much time perfecting any particular song because I am more actively seeking out things I can't play rather than working on playing. The only songs I'm overly interested in playing to 100% fruition are the hardest songs.

Other people would have perfected many songs in the time I've been playing. My goal is a bit more grandiose - I want to be able to play everything, so I don't focus too heavily on playing specific songs.

I'd be careful who you listen to as far as the right way to learn is. A lot of people have exactly one person's experience and are keen to assert that based on what they've experienced (and reinforced by reading other 1 opinion people), that there is a specific way to learn something. If you're moving forward with synthesia, you're moving forward. To be fair, I would put synthesia in sheet music mode and cop that hit.

The real way to learn anything is to constantly monitor yourself and intelligently pick your targets by poking holes in your weaknesses and fight them. If you do that, you will always prevail. Any assertions that specific techniques work are just opinions that you should listen to, but not treat as gospel.

        • Very thoughtful and balanced answer. Thanks mate.

      • No, as I couldn't when I bought it….

.still cant but im getting there

NB If you dont have a guitar, just buy a cheap-ish pacfica or similar, dont get a ultra cheap guitar even as first guitar.

    • Does it teach you how to tune a guitar? I literally have no idea about music in even the slightest capacity so don't know if i could do that so that i could get started

      • +2

I don't think it teaches you to tune the guitar, but I might be wrong. I wouldn't worry, it's a trivial thing to learn.

Tuning a guitar just means turning each of the 6 pegs at the top. As you turn one, it will make the string you're adjusting tighter which the note that it will make gets higher. To make it go lower, you turn it the other way. The tuner just wants you to keep plucking the string and turning the pegs until the note is correct. IE, if the tuner says the note is high, you turn the peg to decrease the tension. It's nothing more than that.

If you're buying a guitar, have the guitar shop place show you how to do it. If not, you can youtube it.

        • Thanks

        • +1

Did the tutorial earlier today. It does teach you how to tune the guitar. Thought it was good

          • +1

            @CBrads4: Sweet - good info, wasn't sure.

      • Most guitars come with a tuner and they are cheap as anyway. Very easy to tune. As a general better guitars hold tune better as well.

  • Jeez… the DLC rocks up

    • Crazy thing is.. I own most of it. Most bought on sale.

      Still would be 3k+

      No regrets though.

  • 1555 bits of DLC….awesome

    • +5

There's even more on PC with CustomForge.

      • Is the CustomsForge DLC free after buying the Cherub Rock DLC? How does the CustomsForge DLC compare to the official DLC?

        • +2

Yes. You must Cherub Rock. It's mostly just as good as DLC. The best CDLC will have lead/rythem/bass and even Dynamic Difficulty.

  • Note: you can buy any USB guitar cable and with mods have it work, dont need the 'real tone' cable. For PC at least

  • I loved this game but my elec guitar tension is a bit off and it's not the best to tune anymore. I wish I could use my guitar to at least emulate itself to play this still.

    • Restring it.

      • Yeah I'll try that again sometime and hope for the best

  • Anyone think its worth buying the official realtone cable? Or are there cheaper alternatives that are just as good?
Edit: never mind, just saw the link above.

    • The real tone is super simple and works great. I can even use it on my iPad with Yousician.

The cheap cable I got off eBay had static and the sound would not come out of my speakers because it identifies as a sound device.

    • I bought the realtone for $48 shipped (from Kogan eww). It works fine, cant speak of alternatives but its not that dear
