Dashcam for a Convertible / Open Top

I recently just bought an Open Top Morgan Plus 8 car (see https://www.classicandsportscar.com/features/buyers-guide-mo… for photos).
I'm now trying to figure out if there is some dash cam that I could install in this car.

What I'd like to have:

  1. Tiny so it can fit under/next to the mirror. There is very little windshield realestate available.
  2. Quick to remove/install so I can theoretically remove it and store it somewhere safe while parked.
  3. Preferably a camera that can record both front and rear.

Thank you.

Its a nice car, don't ruin the car with a dash cam.

Guessing they want a dash cam in case someone ruins the nice car for them.

What you gonna do with the footage ? Take to cops ? They would say, nice car , here is the police report number and go talk to your insurance? Or put on YouTube/ Tiktok?

Having number plate isn't enough, your need the drivers details with the driving licence number. Best cops can do is giving the registered owners details if you lucky.

Perhaps only advantage is to prove as not at faults for insurance.

Happened to me. My parked car got hit. Gave the video to police, they found the driver and fined them.
Also gave the video to my insurance company, no exess to be paid.

          Paid for itself.

While you're at it, remove the seat belts.

If you want one camera that can do both from the same unit and has a pretty small form factor I would go for the Garmin Dashcam Tandem. The way that the Garmin cams mount to the windscreen is magnetic (small magnetic piece is stuck to the windscreen) which means that you can remove the whole mount and the camera unit easily. The magnetic piece is quite unassuming, appearing as a small metal disk (have a look at this guide).

Alternatively if you are looking for two cameras, the smallest dash cam I have seen is the Garmin Dashcam Mini, but the issue is where to attach the rear facing camera. I have a Mazda MX-5 and attached my rear dashcam to the windguard. Looking at the photos you shared I'm unsure whether the two camera setup would work, but you know the car so better for you to have the options and make the decision :)

    • That Tandem is more of a cabin camera though, I suspect the driver, headrests, passengers might get in the way?

May not be able to capture the license plate of the person that rear ends you due to the angle of the windscreen, but will be enough visibility to show who is at fault in an incident.

One option for point 2 is to use 3M command strips for hanging pictures.

I saw it mentioned in a forum once, tried it recently on a hire car. Worked great.

Only did it on a front cam on the windscreen though.

very nice car. if you always need to remove it then maybe an older go pro with a mount. set it to loop recording. though it doesnt deal with heat, max is like 50C. it's easy to remove and carry

Consider mounting whatever you end up with ‘backwards’. Ie a separate rear camera on the windscreen and the more bulky front unit with controls etc or of sight in the back.

No idea if there are any dash cams that have two ‘remote’ cameras so the unit can hide in a glovebox and only the tiny camera and cables go to the front/back.

  • I would not be entirely focused on getting a dash cam that is rearward facing , if someone hits you from the rear its their fault anyway.

But if your adamant , Look into a Dash cam that is a single unit but has a rearward facing camera inbuilt such as THIS

Additionally with an older car such as that if your main concern is parking foremost then driving in traffic then you will need a hardwire kit to ensure the dash cam is receiving power even when the car is off.

Most Dash-cams on today market are very easy to remove (within seconds) so that should not be a large issue going forward.

Another option could be a motorcycle dash cam with the small cameras that can be mounted just about anywhere including the grill (with extension leads) and the recording unit gets mounted under the dash or seat etc. It’s not exactly a quick remove item though.

    • Yes, thanks, I was looking exactly at that. The cameras for the motocyle dash cams are tiny and almost invisible and the unit itself is separate so I can hide it somewhere safe with only the small camera visible. For now this looks like the most viable option.

    Mount one on your head

  • Given there will be about 4 GoPro's suctioned to the car in various places as you flex your awesome new car on YouTube - surely one of them will capture the accident that you are preempting.

Have fun with the new ride. What's your YouTube channel called? I want to follow your ownership journey.

Hahahah. Nice one. I have no plans to install any GoPros or make any YouTube channel at all.
But, if you are around Sydney you might hear me roaring on the streets :)

    Street Guardian SG9663DR

    Blackvue DR750X-2CH PLUS

2 x Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 but that might suck having to double up SD cards and power.

2 x Blueskysea B1W but that might suck having to double up SD cards and power.

VIOFO MT1 if you can figure out how to install a motorcycle cam on a car.
