Hynix Gold P31 or Samsung Evo 870 Plus for Laptop M.2 SSD Storage Upgrade?

Hi. I am thinking of upgrading my laptop storage with a 2TB M.2 NVME SSD on a PCIe v3 controller. Given the same price, which of the two SSDs in the subject is better? I realise Hynix Gold P31 punches above its weight, especially when it comes to temperature. It was considered excellent value in the past. But that was when the Samsung Evo 870 Plus was more expensive. Now they are the same price, hence the dilemma. Any insights would be appreciated.

If you're storing anything of importance on it, I'd go for the Evo. Samsung reliability.

You've obviously never bought a Samsung washing machine! /s

The difference is likely minimal enough to never notice, both will be extremely reliable (SK Hynix is hardly a no-name brand, they're the second largest memory maker in the world and just bought Intel's NAND division).

Samsung is much easier to get though, pretty much a pick of retailers for the 2TB at $300, it would make buying and warranty a lot easier.

      • Thank you both for your perspectives on this.

This is hard to beat for the price. It may be gen 4 but the speed peaks at gen 3 speed so you don't lose out. For the price it's good storage and fast enough. Laptop has a WD black and this, can't tell the difference during gaming and normal usage unless your benchmarking

    • Can the heatsink be removed? I assume it would have to be removed prior to fitting the SSD into a laptop, right?

    • Also, being PCIe gen 4, it appears to run quite hot even when in a gen 3 slot, according to some reports. Did you find that to be the case at all?

Heatsink can be removed. I have it in a Lenovo legion5pro which has its own heatsink so I recommend keeping the thermal pads from the ssd if you get it. It doesn't run any hotter. Those benchmarks temps are sustain read/write unless that's all you plan on doing hours a day. Good for game storage and video files no hotter than the WD black. Put it this way I haven't seen it throttle yet playing final fantasy 7 remake
