I don't understand why Bosch has started including the old 5a batteries in all their packs.
They were pushing the Procore batteries hard for a while in these combos and redemptions but now they've reverted to the old batteries.

Nothing wrong with the old batteries but the Procore batteries are up there with the best tool batteries on the market.

    • The old non ProCore batteries dont power the new 18V tools as well. Must be lacking top current draw even though they are rated at same Ah.
See reviews of the 18v-200 impact and circular saws. Must more "power" with the ProCore batteries

Bosch has gone to the dogs. So many of their products are just rebranded generic Chinese.

      • Example?

        • Most of their drill bits are the first thing to mind. The cheapies and even the $$$ cobalt ones. Sutton are so much better at every level.

          • @Charity: Yeah every manufacturer has 100000 piece multi pack drill bits that are cheap. And always much cheaper than Sutton. There’s a reason for that. But It doesn’t say much about the actual tools or appliances though.

I don’t remember where my Bosch impact diver is made but my old green Bosch drill was made in Hungary.

Our old Bosch dish washer was awesome, and our washing machine is probably 10 years old and never missed a beat. And we have kids.

      • Don’t necessarily agree - their washers and dryers seem to be excellent (especially the ones made in Germany)

      • Well their tools are excellent and the new biturbo range is phenomenal.

Just a shame it's hard to get good deals or redemptions on the procore batteries for the past 18 months or so.

I don't think you can judge a company by its drill bits.

I do agree that that Bosch bits are pretty shit but Suttons has also been shit for a long time as well.

Not many of my Bosch tools are Made in PRC believe it or not but some are made in random Euro countries like Czech republic and Bulgaria lol and of course there are still quite a few still Made in Germany as well.

  • How is Bosch compare to Ryobi?

    • +18

Streets ahead, well this Bosch Blue stuff is. Bosch Green is a bit lower quality.

      • +2

Don't know who downvoted you but you are absolutely correct. I myself use Milwaukee but Bosch blue is up there with Milwauke and dewalt

        • -3

I wouldnt so far to say that they're 'up there', but definately better than Ryobi

      • Yep, green = DIY and blue = professional.

I have both and the green is still going strong, after years of use (it’s about 13 years old now). I recently got a blue impact driver with ProCore battery, it’s great.

      • +5

Bosch Blue is definitely part of the Big 4.

        Your thinking of Bosch Green.

        • -5

Yes. It does say Bosch blue.

      • +4

Bosch blue and Ozito are miles apart.
Ozito good for a job followed by throw away, Bosch blue lasts for years and years

      • +1

Do some research, definitely at par with Milwaukee
And most of my tools are Milwaukee odd occasion I have used Bosch blue cant tell a difference

      • Bosh blue is the trade like.
I think the confusion has come from the green line being about everywhere alongside Ryobi, and so it's all they're associated with the home handyman in the public eye.

Being on sites every day there's always at least one trade with some bosh blue that's been 'well worn' yet seem to be kicking.

DeWalt blend everything in, home handyman through to trade, just multiple models.
Makita and Milwaukee don't water things down, you just pay top dollar for trade quality.

        • Makita have cheaper models. I’ve never used them so no idea how good/bad they are.

          • @g1: Ok, can't say I've ever seen them, but in saying that I've never looked too closely at Makita.
I'm mainly the DeWalt ecosystem and just stepping into the M12 Milwaukee range

          • @g1: yeah lots of the stuff they sell in bunnings is the cheaper stuff, but need to look closer at model numbers

      • Have you ever used a powertool?

    • +4

Bosch Blue is probably best in class. That is if Festool and paying a grand for a drill is not your thing :)

    • Ryobi is more of a budget brand. Bosch quality is generally much higher but Ryobi has a wider variety of tools and is targeted towards DIYers.

      • Hmmm do Ryobi have more tools in their platform than Makita? It would be interesting to know.

        • A quick search shows Ryobi advertising 255+ and Makita has 275+. I'm not sure what they consider a tool either. Each individual product may be counted so if you narrow it down by type, the actually numbers would be much lower.

For the average person I doubt it would really matter as they'd both cover all the common tools.

          • @BBear53:

            Makita has 275+

They have more like 10x that many in the entire catalogue, along with Milwaukee, they are unmatched with tool options

            • +1

@toomuchdogfur: Haha, I was actually contimplating one of those for the work ute, but got a mini nespresso hand press instead.

          • @BBear53: They cover so much. Its pretty useful. On the other hand Milwaukee and Hikoki have smaller ranges.
If wanting to stay on one platform for all tools those wide ranges really shine. As long as they are good tools.

            • +1

@g1: Yeah that's the reason I bought into the Makita environment when a drill and driver combo went on sale. I mainly got it for the 5Ah battery.

Good choice of tools, reputation for quality and they're stocked by most places.

    • The thing with Bosch is some of their stuff is good some is really shit. Just cos it's blue doesn't mean it's any good.

So I would say look at each tool individually.

You can say this about other brands too, but I've noticed a larger disparity with Bosch.

Also, their local support has stuffed me around chronically which has put me off them as well.

Ryobi is a mid low end brand but generally offers very good value for money, at the expense of performance, durability and ergonomics.

      • +1

Yeah I have a Ryobi drop/mitre saw and the angles are pretty off, I’ve spent a while “calibrating” 0 and 90 degrees so my cuts are straight, and 45 degree lines were out a fair bit too. There are design faults with it too. But it was a couple of hundred cheaper than some other brands, so you get what you pay for. I’m managing with it though, it’s just more fiddly.

  • Excellent deal. Good way to have a whole professional platform for relatively small cost.
After the order goes through use the points to part pay for a multi tool like https://www.totaltools.com.au/147992-bosch-18v-brushless-mul… or https://www.totaltools.com.au/113528-bosch-18v-oscillating-m… and majority of tasks are covered. All the extras like recip or circ saw, or plane, etc to be added as needed…

    • Do the points come through straight after buying?
Edit—> takes about 10-30 mins for them to appear.

  • if you have insider gold is it 40x points? (prob not)

    • +7

You're apparently Associated, shouldn't you know?

      • i was at home yesterday

  • Noob question - what's the difference between a hammer drill and a rotary hammer? What tasks would each be suited for?

    • +1

      https://www.coates.com.au/whats-the-difference-between-a-rot…
Rotary hammer is good for bigger jobs, and also has some useful attachments like tile remover.
Hammer drill will do small jobs. Rotary hammer will do the small jobs quicker.

    • +2

Rotary Hammer is for drilling brick/concrete/masonry easily.
It takes SDS drill bits which pump in and out as they spin.
A basic hammer drill isn't in the same league.

    • +1

Basically rotary for hard bricks or concrete, hammer for wood. SDS drill bits with a good rotary go through concrete like butter, but a hammer drill could take forever depending on the bit. Hammer is likely enough for most diy.

      • I recently drilled 6mm in concrete with masonry bit using standard hammer drill ~1min. Rotary hammer with equivalent SDS bit took about 10sec haha

    • rotary hammer drills through concrete/hard stuff like knife through butter… hammer drill much more effort, but they're usually more compact.

  • +3

SDS is much more efficient than a hammer drill but don't forget prior to their widespread use in the last couple of decades the construction industry used hammer drills so entire cities have been built with them. So its not that they can't do the job, just that it will take longer.
Side fact: Bosch invented the rotary hammer drill (SDS)

  • I added this to it https://www.totaltools.com.au/174613-bosch-18v-1-x-5-0ah-21m… as I needed a new one.

With this I can now redeemed a procore 8ah battery and I'll sell the extra 5ah battery and charger from that kit.

The above kit is listed on the Bosch T&C as eligible but not on the total tools website.

this was $229 during christmas sale

      • Don’t think so, their Christmas catalogue has it at $279. Black Friday way $249 unless you mean Boxing Day?

        • probably boxing day sale… but i definitely bought mine for $229

          • @demere: With the Bonus cashback to spend in store works out around the same price. Planing on getting the multi tool with that or I do need a compact air compressor hmmm decisions.

            You happy with the tool?

    • Good deal if you're not concerned about the brushed motor. I've found recips are one tool that really benefits from the extra grunt

      • These are brushless

        • Sorry, I was replying to trueno about the recip saw that is a brushed model.

      • I think Bosch GSA 18V-32 recip saw is brushless:
        https://www.totaltools.com.au/150777-bosch-18v-blue-brushles…
Don't think any other current Bosch recip saws are brushless.

Its a big difference in cost to go from brushed to brushless in this case. If the power increase is worth the price difference all depends on the user.

  • multi tool is more useful if you doing DIY renovation

  • i have bosch stuff it’s fantastic kit, much better than my mates makita particularly the drills, that hammer drill is a beast

  • +1

I got this as an upgrade to the cheap crap I have collected over the years. Diffinately a step up imo with the DIY in me pretty happy.
