YouTube Ads and How Channels Are Paid?

Hi all.

I use YouTube vanced on my Android devices and ublock origin within Firefox so I never see any ads interrupting what I watch there. (And when I see others without such "protections" I am utterly amazed at how pervasive the ads have become.) My understanding is that the channel then receives no revenue from such ads. True?

However I can see paid promotions within the clips of course. Depending on what channel and what I expect I might just sit it through while I do something else, or I might intentionally forward past it. If I do the latter is this detected by the advertiser and will the channel be denied payments, or are these promotions usually paid upfront or solely on the total number of views?

The product placement is a contract signed with the channel and the product's company. It might be negotiated based on expected views, subscriber number, or affiliate links in the video/description etc. Skipping the actual product placement may not really have any bearing on these. But then a company might have 100k views on a video and yet have very little sales from their product placement, they might pull sponsorship. A lot of "depends".

I use Brave - it blocks youtube ads by default. I go past the ads by using the numbers on the keyboard. Pressing 6 takes the videos to the 60% mark of the video. I usually start a video at 1 or 2 to skip all the "HEY GUYS WELCOME BACK THANKS FOR" blablala

Yes they donโ€™t get revenue from blocked ads.

Sponsorblock addon will skip the paid promotion bits in videos too. Itโ€™s crowdsourced timestamps from users for seamless viewing.

Morality of it is up to you. Some people are fine blocking all these and buying merch off content creators instead.

I block all ads on all sites. The ๐Ÿ„ experience is so much ๐Ÿ‘ this way.

The advertiser only knows about the traffic that clicks the link or uses the channels code. They have no knowledge of whether people watched the ad segment or not.

Payment happens when the visitor carries out an action that the advertiser wants such as signing up for a trial or purchasing something.

    • This is not exactly true, the sponsor can ask the owner for the youtube stats to see if their sponsor ad is being skipped.

I imagine its an important aspect as a lot of Youtubers are told to link it into the actual video as much as possible, advertisers wouldn't ask for this if they didn't think people were skipping their advertisement.

Do you support your favourite content creators via Patreon/Merch sales etc?

No I don't. But that's a pertinent question and there probably are some that I think I should. And I will. Ta.
