RWC Results Advice

Hey all,

I’m buying a 2004 Mazda 3 (with a RWC).

It was taken in today and the mechanic has listed a few things it needs to pass.

I don’t know much about cars at all, are any of these indicators for further repairs or a cause for concern once they have been fixed?

  • Indicator stalk not self returning
  • Driver seat belt not retracting
  • Both front wheel bearings noisy
  • 2 x cv seals leaking
  • Front link pins boots split
  • Front lower control arm bushings split

Obviously the current owner will have the list all fixed before we complete the hand over.

Guess I’m concerned about whether these caused further damage etc.

Welcome to OzCars, 2nd hand department.

Sounds pretty normal for an 18 year old car. They are fairly easy to do fixes. Nothing to be overly concerned about.

As long as the current owner fixes all the above issues, nothing else is wrong, and you are getting the car at the right price you should be good.

    • Yes an older car, couldn't afford something newer with prices at the moment.

Settled on this 2004 Mazda 3 neo hatch for $4000 including a RWC.

Owner will be getting them fixed as we agreed on the sale including a RWC, was just looking for advice on whether they are red flags and indicators of future repairs or standard for an older car.

Theres quite a few $$ in repairs there..

That's probably $1,000-2,000 in repairs right there. Seems odd for owner to cop that cost for a $4,000 sale…

You might want to spend some money getting a full mechanic inspection as RWC doesn't cover everything that might be wrong with it, mostly just focuses on road safety.

PIcturing seller will back out of a 4000 sale if theres 2000 in repairs possibly more than 2000 when your paying the workshop to do it all

Standard stuff for the age of the vehicle.

    Have you test drove it?

    • +1

Yes, I test drive last week.

Made an offer on the condition of it passing a RWC.

  • Your about to get scammed

  • Owner will be getting them fixed as we agreed on the sale including a RWC

    Not necessarily…

Who chose the mechanic for the original inspection?

    • It’s the mechanic that has serviced the car for the past 5 years, owner took it to them for a RWC today and they noted the list of fixes.

Owner has confirmed they will have the mechanic fix the list to get the RWC

  • Indicator stalk seems a weird one, but not hard to fix.

Seatbelt is not uncommon for an older vehicle.

Other bits are suspension/drive related and pretty much wear items not related to reliability of the vehicle.

If, and only if, the RWC passes should you buy unless (and you already say you can’t) you can fix yourself. Not difficult to do, but labour for a mechanic will add up quick.

    • Thanks for the reply.

I thought so but the indicator issue seems to be common with the Mazda 3.

That's good to know, I wasn't sure if they were wear and tear things or if they might signal bigger issues.

The owner has stated they will get the list fixed and the RWC, just asking for opinions/advice as I am not a car person.

  • Mechanic did a pretty thorough job from the looks of it. Where is he based :) ?
That 2k of repairs is probably not far off the money
