Another NAS Recommendation Post

Looking to get my self a NAS. Mainly for storage and content streaming.
I already have google photo storage for the fact i love their auto tagging and cloud back up however would love something on site for all other personal content. A torrent client capable device with other apps would also be handy.

Been looking into synology and terramaster NAS vs build your own using pie or other hardware however prefer the ease of a gui vs a linux shell however truenas also looks pretty good.

Now thats its 2022 are there any models in particular i should be looking into?. Figured a 2 / 4 bay would be enough especially if I've got some 4tb drives in there.
Also whats a decent price point i should be looking at?

Cheers

  • Google RAID and see which one you want and then you will find out how many HDD/SSD's you need. This will knock out same NAS HW. Then search OZ bargain for previous NAS prices and use this as the price point you should be looking at.

As for 4TB check out the Backblaze HDD stats to see if your HDD are up to it or not. Be aware that when you RAID the HDD you will not get anywhere near the total HDD space to use due to redundancy.

  • Yup, i'm aware of raid and hdd capabilties. More after info on info on synology, terramaster, qnap etc.

  • I've just built an Unraid server and I'm loving it. I have both a Synology 720+ and now the Unraid server (which was lockdown project) and the Synology is going to be looking for a new home. Loving Unraid.

    • What hardware are you running Unraid on?

I bought an old Dell T320 for $300. It's got a 6 core Xeon and a Perc 310 raid card I flashed to LSI. 32Gb Ram and just picked up a Quadro P600 card. It's running about 13 containers from Plex (with Nvidia GPU transcoding), Tdarr(also using NVIDIA NVENC for all the x265 transcoding), Sonarr, Jacket and the usual others. Also setup NextCloud on it which is fantastic. Basically replaces Google Drive.

        • Sounds interesting. Does it use a lot more power than the Synology?

          • @Master Bates: It's currently in the garage and it's really hot so the fan sounds like a Boeing. I'm ordering some bits and pieces to make it run silent. Why this is important is because the fan is a monster. I think it uses about 20w when it's going full tilt. When it's cool it sits at 80w, when it's hot it sits at 103w. The CPU cooler is passive and relies on the system fan when it's hot. Terrible server design! Can't compare power with the Synology as my Synology isn't on a smart meter, but I'd imagine it would probably be way lower. I do have 8 drives in the Unraid though, so it can't be a fair comparison.

  • I've got a synology ds918+ sittin in the other room.. few years old now, but does everything I want… backups, and streamin movies.

    Whats your budget?

Plan for much greater capacity than you think you will need, as it will save you pain and money in the long run.

2 or even 4 bays with only 4TB drives in it does not go far in 2022 if using it for media streaming. Especially with a two bay, you either have no redundancy or you're stuck at 4TB for such a configuration. I strongly recommend against 2 bay NAS for any sort of media streaming purposes, go 4 bay minimum and 6-8 bays if you like high bitrate content. Check your Plex transcode requirements (if any) as not all models support it. You're better off not transcoding if playing back files within a local network but if sending them externally you may need this, but it can always be done by a Plex server seperate to your NAS if desired.

I have a DS1618+ with 8TB disks and it is full. I will buy a DS1821+ with 16TB disks in the near future, and keep the DS1621+ as well.

Go with Synology if buying an off-the-shelf NAS.

  • mine ds1511+ from end of year 2010, still going strong

  • QNAP

  • Any recommended drives to shuck (no SMR!)? I have heaps of jb vouchers to get rid of :)

    • +1

I think anything more than 8TB is CMR now. Could be wrong but I've not hard of any. So it's just luck off the draw whether it's helium or air. I personally like Seagate's as the ones I've bought have had Exos drives inside but it's much of a muchness now.

      • Which Seagate models had the Exos? :)

        • +1

I purchased 4 x STEB14000402 and they all had Exos in them. What I have read is the 16Tb are all Exos. The smaller drives could be Iron Wolf, Exos or even Barracuda's. Only time I got Barracuda's though was on the 8Tb and it was a double whammy, Barracuda's AND SMR :-(
