International Travel Insurance - Need Suggestions for Best Provider to Deal with Vs Coverage Vs Cost

Wife, daughter (about to turn 1y/o) will head off to Mauritius next Sunday, myself in 5 weeks, no choice, have to do it, don't question it please. Will be there until around Easter when we all come back.

Mauritius is "Exercise a high degree of caution", it is not a do not travel destination which precludes many insurance policies.

Looking at travel insurance options, is there a particular provider people would recommend? So much has changed it is difficult to consider whom is the easiest company to deal with, coverage, etc. Essentially after peace of mind if the shit hits the fan, which in my mind is mother and daughter with rona soon after arriving in Mauritius. Gut suggests Medibank private for ~$1250 and be done with it but are they actually the best option at that price point or are they relying on a brand and whatnot.. I need a cover that will also be reasonable to deal with.

It'll be Emirates all the way and back, I do have complimentary 28 Degrees international travel insurance, haven't looked into it

Any constructive and productive advice would be highly appreciated. I need to make this happen asap and need the best options to choose from

I use Fastcover when I travel (www.fastcover.com.au), not sure if they would suit your circumstances but they have always been good to deal with.

I thought Emirates also offered COVID-related cover? I remember reading about this somewhere. If that is true (make sure you read all t&cs), and you have complementary travel insurance, you should probably be okay I think. But you are the best judge. Don't go by what I or anyone else says, check all t&cs and know what you're covered for.

I stopped reading their policy when I got to a limitation of 31 days. The trip will be at least 2 months start to finish. There are some decent benefits there though

That's only applicable to tickets bought before December 2021.

      • "COVID‑19 medical travel insurance* automatically applies to your ticket when you purchase flights between 1 December 2021 and 31 March 2022** and take the first flight of your trip during the same period. The ticket must have 176 as the first‑three digits of the ticket number.

There are no forms to complete, simply purchase your flights either on emirates.com, through our contact centres, our retail offices, or with your travel agent^. If you need to use your coverage you must call one of our 24 hour support numbers in your preferred language. Coverage applies to travel to any overseas country, even if you travel onwards to another city.

In order to claim against your COVID‑19 medical travel insurance, you or someone acting on your behalf must contact the assistance company (contact details provided below) as soon as reasonably possible to notify our insurer of a claim. Our insurer will only settle a claim directly with the provider.

Your coverage is valid for the duration of your return trip (or up to 31 days after your departure date from your original country of departure, whichever is earlier).

If you’re flying on a one way trip, the coverage ends 31 days after you arrive at your final overseas destination."

From that I interpret that they will cover 31 days only, despite it being a ~60 day trip. All that aside, the cancellation policies and included "115usd per day of mandatory quarantine" is pretty darn handy.

Cover-More do cover you if you get COVID o/s; and will cover you for 2months+.

Enjoy Mauritius mate, totally loved the place. It was also our 50th country visited, so definitely symbolic for us.
Hope you have rented a car so you can explore the whole island; I would recommend visiting Domaine des Aubineaux, have lunch at Le Fangourin (maurituan cuisine, in a lovely garden setting), visit a Rhum distillery or two - I'd suggest Rhum De Charamel. Then enjoy the beaches and hopefully you are staying at a nice resort :) :) Enjoy, so envious!

From the tone of his post it seems more like an emergency visit for family or something.

        Thanks, good pick up.

Sorry OP, I got excited when you mentioned Mauritius and got carried away.

    • It's a family emergency, wouldn't fly just now otherwise..

It's a nice place to visit for sure and you're right, you definitely benefit from having your own private transportation. I've been to that Chamarel distillery before.. the tasting sessions were great fun, still have a few bottles

Medibank, Aus Post, Flight Centre, CBA, Webjet, Hello World all sell Cover-More policies which are underwritten by Zurich. I believe Aus Post has the best pricing of those, maybe even better than going to Cover-More directly but they are effectively similar cover sold by the biggest player in the travel insurance space. Allianz is also a big provider. A lot of other insurers hibernated their business during COVID, not sure what they offer with regards to COVID cover now.

The CBA cover is a good product if you are a customer, don't need to purchase flights on their credit card unlike many other financial institutions, just need to be a card holder and activate via app for a comprehensive policy

    • Ironic that the medibank policy is over double the price of the auspost policy, with effectively the same underwriter, cover and T&C.. I'm looking through the auspost PDS now, thanks for the post

      • As a followup to this I found that australia post had the best coverage for price point and often had outright better cover considering that there were often several hundred dollars price difference between 3 policies that were essentially the same coverage. Pays to shop around.

I got AHM travel insurance and chose the comprehensive one with unlimited medical cover, it's just me and it cost under $200 for 3 week travel. My destination country is also classified as "exercise a high degree of caution"

  • Insureandgo came out tops I seem to remember last time choice magazine evaluated TI. When reading the PDS go straight to the part that has all the red lettering and see if it suits you. If you get past those sections and are still interested then look more in depth. https://www.insureandgo.com.au/media/2022/01/IG_MS_PW_OT_022…

  • Oops, see the OP has already gorn. Anyway, useful information to some others perhaps.
