Deals.com.au deal for a $329 ice cream maker for $39

This is a very sad deal as the ice cream maker they are claiming is worth $329 is a bowl type that you put in the freezer for 12 - 18 hours. If it was a condenser type (and a name brand), then it might be worth $300, but this type of ice cream maker just isn't worth over $50.

The company that is offering the deal doesn't even have any contact details on their website that I can find.

This is sad because nearly 500 people have bought this deal and I am sure most of them will be very unhappy when they receive the product in about 6 weeks.

Here is the response I received from deals.com.au

Hi voteoften

We very much appreciate your feedback - the RRP is provided to us by the supplier and we do try to check to ensure that it is correct (they provided a secondary source, but ultimately, if they usually charge too much for the item, we aren't really able to tell them they are wrong).

Thanks for your vigilance though, it is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Very sad, because I would dearly love to see group buying thrive. With as many unhappy customers as they are probably going to get out of this one deal, they are hurting the industry.

To deals.com.au credit, they did respond within a few minutes.

    • thanks for that. My whole point is the avg person can not get an email address easily to confirm that these do not have a compressor.

I am actually mortified at the RRP on this.

It is one thing to sell dodgy dead sea or other BS cosmetic items where a comparative can not easily be identified. This is a machine that apparently has no unique features justifying an RRP of about $250 above what other machines, which do the exact same thing, are priced at. Including name brands taht are relatively trusted.

There are nearly 500 buyers. I am really upset about this.

  • No surprise, deals.com.au are dodgy.

Sounds like they're pretty much passing the buck - if they know that the merchant's rrp is above what it should be, but proceed in running the deal anyway, they are just as bad, and are also profiting from the lies. Worse still, they refuse to take responsibility for their part in the lies.

  • If a company wants to do dodgy deals on jewellery or no name cosemtics that it one thing. The value is not easily ascertainable.

Seriously, I feel like this is like slapping on a $250 value onto a basic no name 2 slice toaster. The value is easily ascertainable.

I want the group buy industry to thrive. I just don't see the point of this sort of thing. I can only see it ending in a lot of people getting something different than what they thought would get.

    • Okay, thanks. I did it.

  • No good bagging one group buy mob. If you enter "FrostMate Automatic Ice Cream maker" into google a whole page of them comes up. All offering the same deal. Unless they are linked they are all in it up to their eyeballs.

    • Oh well. I complained about deals. I said that the only mention of this frostmate machine was in conjunction with group buying companies.

  • Yeah, I saw a heap. Smarterdailydeals. Hot deals. Ilovecoupons. Dealzoo. Melbournedailydeals. Dailydealso.

And that is just the first page.

  • i dont get why people get sucked into this, if they just did some simple research, its obivous most things sold by any group buy company can be purchased cheaper on ebay.

they are not getting a deal here but at least not completed overcharged. Probably just a standard price for these kind of ice cream makers!

  • There was a Mistral one offered by zizzle a couple of days ago for $19 or $20 plus $10 postage. That was a fair price and a brand we have at least heard of.

I lodged a complaint with ADMA and now they say they have had an "issue" and haven't actioned it. Hopefully they will get on it.

When an item is readily comparable, it is a dumb move to make to fiddle with the RRP.
