shipping looks to be a flat $30, maybe can add that in the title to make it clearer? :)

  • Price also doesn't include GST, and because of their weird international situation it isn't added. But if you're buying it for business purposes you don't get to claim/balance that GST on your BAS.

EXPANSYS offer only a 3-month warranty repair service, where the return shipping cost (to overseas) is probably borne by the customer. Their extended warranty service costs an extra $33.00.

They are even allowed to operate a .com.au domain name and associated business without holding an ABN. How? Just because they own the trademark?. Most consumers will have no idea that EXPANSYS don't have a presence in Australia and if there is a problem with their transaction, then obtaining protection and having a recourse of action through the Office of Fair Trading and/or ACCC will be very difficult.

      • Hell Camelgrass,

We have a legitimate claim on our AU domain and all other ~ 60 domains that we hold. This has been registered via the normal AU channels.

Our company is *possibly the World's largest online tech retail store with a presence across 100+ countries and a listing on the UK Stock exchange. As a result we are driven by the relationships that with hold w/ our shareholders - a key element here is customer service experience + ofcourse business growth (refer customers).

At the end of the day, obviously whilst we'd love to do so, we're not going to be able to please everyone (I mean, is this really ever going to be possible?)

We do/ will continue to do our best to look after the customers we have - our online brand these days is more important to us than worrying about the ACCC - and I mean: consumers are now more empowered online than ever before + akin to most leading online retailers, we are trying our very best to ensure that our customers enjoy their shopping experience where poss + if something does go wrong, well, we're there to offer support. So truly, our governing body is effectively our customers.

We love tech products + we love our customers + we have a top notch worldwide sourcing supply which enables us to offer great deals for new release items pretty fast into the markets that we operate within. Not everyone is going to be our customer, I realise that + that's OK. We're simply focused on looking after those individuals + businesses who do trust us with their buys as well as we can.

        As noted below -
        3: Warranty:
Our standard warranty is 3 months back to base (this means that if there's any issue with the device, we'll give you OUR FedEx account details to get this couriered back to us with - billed on us, not our customers) this is for both ways - until we have provided you with a perfect device, as they should be. We offer an extended warranty cover for 15months cover (for an additional $33 AUD)for those who wish to get more time on this.

Cheers. Pls feel welcome to ask me any questions, I'd be happy to help where ever I can.

*I say possibly to avoid being tested on this fact - you may visit our parent company's site for more information on our Global breadth of coverage and public listing information.

        • Hi ExpansysDoesIT,

Your comment regarding your relationship with shareholders and associated business growth doesn't necessarily mean a good customer service experience or value for money for customers.

All you have to do is look at the BIG FOUR BANKS situation in Australia to know what I mean.

You also admit that your customers have no access to consumer protection through any representitive body in Australia. I think many customers would be fooled otherwise, seeing that your contact details are an Australian phone number and Australian email address, and your domain is a .com.au.

Anyway, pointing to some comments you made below, why would you charge GST on any transaction - even on orders above the $1000 GST free threshold? I thought the customer pays any applicable GST and duties direct to customs on import? Or did I read it wrong, you do in fact leave that responsibility to Australian customs and the customer - since you have no presence in Australia (except online) and are not a registered business here.

        • Hey Camelgrass,

Thanks for raising these points- all good ones + appreciate your comments. Happy Friday by the way - weeks almost over :-)

It does for Expansys actually. If Expansys' customer service isn't at a level that customers approve of, they'll not be in business for much longer + certainly would not have experienced the YOY growth figures that I've been seeing.

Sorry, whilst I understand where you're coming from, I'm not able to agree on your comment in regards to the BIG FOUR BANKS - Aussies are some of the smartest online shoppers out there + we have no issue blogging about, posting about, WOMing about what eaaks us down at the pub, at the gym- whereever, when we experience post purchase dissonance, or have a somewhat negative experience -this is what is keeping serious online sellers inline, not the ACCC and I mean this with sincerity (whilst I'm writing this as an Expansys rep, these views/ comments are my own - I'm trying to be as candid as poss here.)

Whilst I appreciate what you are saying about the ACCC, I'm not sure how you'd like me to respond to this, as Aussies are shopping online for better deals more than ever before now- most of the case we are buying from offshore stores like Expansys.

Expansys is merely one of many offshore stores, which offers Aussies, and other country folk products + choice - honestly I'm not sure what ACCC's stance is on this, but the fact that this offshore buying behaviour is happening on such a large scale now, at such a fast growing trajectory, is a point that is surely valid here. Quite right.

Expansys notes on site in several places that the warehouse is in Hong Kong - I'm not sure that the site could be any clearer as the full address is noted in there for all to see -it's noted on the Contact us page + also in the Ts+Cs. At point of purchase - customers are asked to read + to accept these terms prior to confirming their order as well. I wrote these T+Cs myself, so if you have any comments/ think that anything is unclear please let me know. Feedback is King.

Re GST - for orders that come in above the 10% GST threshold point, I can't recall ever importing anything into AU before to that value myself, to be honest, so I'm not exactly sure what you'd see there in terms of approach/ recipient experience exactly from Customs, however (most of customers keep their orders below $1000 to claim the benefit so we don't get much feedback on that - if any, I've not come across it) I guess that you'd expect to see a fee's owing notice/advice from FedEx/ local import authorites for the GST amount payable, if your invoice has not captured GST, or falls short here. I'm not sure that there'd be any getting away with that.

If you were billed for GST and this was noted on your invoice as being paid correctly - then you'd obviously be in the clear there for already having paid it.

Just like import fees, this is outside of Expansys's jurisdiction. Providing information to customers on the 10% GST threshold rule, is helping to educate buyers, who may not be aware of this offshore shopping benefit - sure it's good for offshore stores like Expansys too whilst this benefit lasts. Win-win for now - customers are generally pretty happy, and when they're not - boy do we online marketers / business managers /staff of sites like Expansys hear all about it/ get to read about it online/ hear about it down at the pub, or at the gym-where ever.

Hope this covers your points anyway.

        • +1

most of the case we are buying from offshore stores like Expansys.

I wouldn't be too sure about that as a blanket statement. Just see this very recent thread to understand how highly OzB's value 100% local AU stock:
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67964

we have a top notch worldwide sourcing supply which enables us to offer great deals

Let's see far more deals from Expansys posted on OzB if that's the case!! Since, as you say, you are possibly the world's largest online tech store, that shouldn't be a problem then. There have been some decent deals posted, but they have been pretty much far and few between compared to some of the other retailers.

      • hi camelgrass can u help me find a phone i can buy..

  • If you add $30 for the shipping, then isnt all phones cheaper?

    https://www.allphones.com.au/shop/htc-one-x.asp

    • no this is still cheaper by $8 because allphones charge $668 instore or $658 + $15 postage online

      • +16

I'd still rather pay a measly $8.00 more to get the phone from a local company like allphones.

They have over 170 physical shop locations Australia-wide. The phone from EXPANSYS is most likely shipped from Hong Kong.

I'm sure allphones will give you an $8.00 discount on a $668.00 phone if you ask nicely ;).

        • +8

Yep, far more sensible. Buying this "deal" to save $8 is brain-dead.

        • +4

well, according to another user "xotic" u cant neg unless you can find it cheaper elsewhere

          "xotic on 05/04/2012 - 16:20

Please re-read the rules for negging. You can neg if you can show a cheaper price elsewhere. While, your comment is valid and useful for others, the neg is not justified."

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67291#comment-823400

          LOL

I negged this deal anyway, cos u right, its a no brainer to buy from Allphones : )

        • The price if the One X is $658 at Allphones now - $2 cheaper than this deal (Assuming you pickup from Allphones)

Seijai the joke is on you ROFLMAO :). Your neg is perfectly valid LOLOL

        • "You can neg if you can show a cheaper price elsewhere."

It gets a bit silly when the price difference is barely over 1%, as $8 would have been. Further more given such a policy doesn't take into account a whole range of factors like the before mentioned warranty and support overheads.

Neg worthy or not, I'd pay $10 more to get it via a local dealer. If it's $2 cheaper now then all the better.

      • @ bargain88 didnt you read my comment? i clearly said $658 + $15 postage online and $668 in store so how is it $2 cheaper?
I posted this a few weeks back, and it seem people on ozbargain didnt like allphones very much.
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67007
And sure i rather support allphones but they wont give you a discount no matter how nicely you ask because they said their price is already the lowest price locally.

        • Ah I missed that. Either way if I was to get a One X I would much rather get it locally for $668 instead of frantically hitting F5 hoping the courier has updated its delivery status.

Then again, Ozbargain is full of people who would do anything to have an extra dollar in their wallets.

  • +2

God….this is rather frustrating. You know you get a super phone, but there just isn't enough good apps can fully use the phone's power and reach its full potential (for average users that is, and I believe they are the majority). I am so tempted to get this phone, but after a yr use of my HTC Desire HD, I gave up. The hardware is beautiful, but app wise, not all but many MANY are just….disappointing in terms of quality & quantity. Android deserves A LOT more good apps…

    • +2

The grass is always greener on the other side but the truth is that these days Android gets 95% of iOS's worthwhile apps plus a few they don't have. Smartphones are still quite an immature technology and apps in general have a long way to go.

    • +1

You can understand why from a developer's perspective though.

If you're trying to make money in a very cut-throat industry, making an app or game for high-end phones like this one is basically cutting your own throat as you only reach a small % of the market.

If however, you create something that most phones can use you reach the majority of the market and make the most money. Even then, most developers aren't going to be seeing thousands of dollars of profit, so it's very difficult as a developer to justify ever developing for that small market of high-end phones.

  • Deal seems good.

Note: There has been a reported isssue regarding both the One X and One S.

One X: Liquid in the screen kind of runs when you hold the phone a certain way
    Source:
    http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/04/htc-one-x-in-death-grip-has…

    One S: Paint chipping issue
    Source:
    http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/04/one-s-not-impossible-to-dam…

    Decent phones though.

    • ive got a one x. and you have to be rather stupid to get it to the point where the screen runs.. need to press on the sides rather hard.

and the one x is not painted.. the one S is a totally different device.. :)

  • they let you choose what colour right?

  • +1

Really good phone - Sense is much more nimbler, back to the older style Sense when it was more useful rather than a hinderance (I was coming off a Desire, and I was aware from playing around that the Sense on models in-between (e.g. Sensation) were getting very clunky).

Non-removable battery, micro SIM and non-expandable memory are my biggest gripes, but they have been well-covered before (anything less than 32gb and I would have passed on it). Otherwise the phone is very good - nice screen and handy camera. I don't smash my phone all day because, you know, I have work and stuff, so battery has been very good doing nothing - I would say better than my Desire. But battery does take a bit of a hammering when you start putting a load onto the Tegra.

I don't think I have the screen issue mentioned above, and if I do I don't intend on putting that much pressure on the screen anyway.

I did get my One X for a lot cheaper than this deal (I believe it was a one-off pricing error from the retailer) but I reckon still good all-round value for those looking at a phone now. Otherwise hold out for the S3's spec sheet.

  • +5

Hold off to see what the S3 will look like before commiting to a new Android.

    My 2 c.

  • Should we hold off a bit more for the Samsung Galaxy S3? Must be launched in a matter of weeks I think?

    • people were saying that back in January…

    • +1

My guess is samsung will launch closer to olympics. Have the olympics use it as the official phone….

  • -3

    That display's a bit small isn't it?

    • +2

      4.7" is small?

      Jesus Christ.

      InB4 penis jokes

  • really should be far cheaper considering the local price. The only thing is they have the grey model which some people may prefer, though the white is much more popular. $600 including shipping would be more reasonable.

  • +2

better buying local, saving not enough to risk it.

  • +1

For the measly $8 difference buy something locally.

  • Hi there all, Expansys here.

Thx for picking this up Bumluffa.

    Writing to clarify some things:

    1: GST.
We don't bill GST on orders less than the $1000 GST threshold rule - most of you wld be aware of our AU gov's initiative for this part.

For BAS: if you pay GST on business related items, then you can certainly claim the GST back when you lodge your BAS - if you don't pay the GST however = pro quo, nothing to claim back. No GST paid - less items to note on your BAS paperwork.

    2: Shipping
Yes. Our Asia hub is in HK - we have a warehouse here + another in France. We only ship with FedEx for the protection of high value items (signature on delivery for customer device safety + speedy delivery).

4: Polar White + Glamour Grey are same price.

Hope this helps to clarify some areas. Feel welcome to let me know if you have any questions/ require any clarification.

All the best. It's a great device, but then we are pretty spoilt for choice right now with so many hot smartphones being released.

    Cheers.

    • Which means since you can get it for a few bucks more at All Phones, which you can claim back $60ish GST for your business, doesn't ship from overseas and comes with the normal 12 month warranty at that price… this isn't a bargain.

An OK price. Nothing horrible about it. Which is why I didn't neg. But hardly a bargain. Which is why I didn't pos.

    • what turns me off is the only 3 months warranty, thats pathetic and then have to charge extra if you want longer warranty? pfft. The phone is only $8 more at allphones locally. if you were selling the phone with a full warranty and shipped for $600 that would be a better deal.

      • Fair call. But 15 months is 3 months more than a standard 12 mth offer + a grt deal of our customer issues come in after the 12 mth mark - which is why we offer this option.
