Television Recommendations 55”-60” - Budget Inexpensive

Does anyone have any recommendations for a new inexpensive TV sized around 55-60”?

The alternate question is, what is the minimum I need to spend to buy a decent TV? I don’t have any specific criteria, other than I just don’t want to buy rubbish or spend more than I need to. (Watching TV isn’t a high priority but we’re probably due for an upgrade).

Thanks

  • Try Costco.

  • Sounds like ALDI as you can return them within 60 days. Read the https://www.aldi.com.au/en/about-aldi/returns-policy/ as the conditions are very reasonable and 99.9% of other retailers do NOT allow you to return TV's because you don't like them.

The ALDI tv's vary depending on who makes them and what features the have or not have. In general the ALDI smart TV's like allot of the cheaper TV's is not good and if you want an smart TV get an Android media player with Android TV as it will be allot better and cheaper than a TV with Android TV.

Allot of the cheaper TV's sound quality suck, so you may need to hook the TV up to a sound bar or AMP/Tuner.

I have an expensive 75" $2800 and a budget 4k 55" $325 delivered got around the same time, the budget TV viewing angle is bad and sound terrible but has ARC so with a soundbar is ok.. for just straight on viewing for occasional news watching and some sport its ok.. you can look at Aldi when they have a TV sale or Look at the FFalcon TV's at JB. seems to have decent reviews. nothing beats seeing in person

    Free on facebook…

We've had several available over the last month in our local community group.

TCL or Hisense should be the bear minimum, you go lower than this to something like ALDI or FFALCON and you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of picture quality and user interface.

Trust me, you don't want to fork out $500 to get something that you'll want to throw a remote at after a year.

    Else gumtree/marketplace.

My parents recently got a 58in EKO 4k from BigW for $499, at 3m+ viewing distance it looks fine …
Off-angle the colors look faded and sound from TV is crap, but it works fine for their (minimal) use …

    • got a 58in EKO

I was looking for an EKO, an answer to our sound…

  • Minimum to get a decent tv is pretty subjective. I used to think a sub $1000 would be okay, and I had one for a few years. I was happy with it. Then I bought an OLED and I don't think I could ever go back.

We have a 75" Hisense in the lounge which has their proprietary OS, but has Netflix, Youtube, Prime, ABC, SBS, and Plex apps (plus many more I don't use). It's done everything we've ever needed.

I have a 50" TCL that I use as a 4k monitor (that I'm using right now). As a TV it's fine, but the picture quality isn't great as a monitor. The viewing angles are fine, but the colour reproduction isn't great (banding and dithering) - which you notice as a monitor but not as a TV.

Basically, both of my cheap brand TV's work fine as TV's.

Personally, I'd be considering one of the cheap QLED TV's now. JVC and EKO at BigW seem like a good deal. Go and see one in person.

  • I also have a hisense circa 2018. Can't fault it at all. Does all I need from a TV. It has smart functions, but I still use a chromecast as the family is well versed in it.

Also, TBH, the screen is hardly used as a TV now. It gets used a lot, but for gaming on consoles and streaming services. Hasn't skipped a beat.

Also, was impressed as the audio, while probably not audiophile quality, was plenty loud enough that we skipped buying a sound bar.

  • Happy with my 50 inch Hisense A7G although in hindsight maybe should have gone 55.

Although its got its own OS just bought a chromecast to go with it and now solely use that - don't even have the antenna/free to air channels connected
