Experience with Sixt Car Hire

Hi guys,

Have anyone done car rental hire with sixt? I'm going to Tasmania for 5 days and they seem to be the cheapest and they have cars at Launceston airport as well. I'm going to do a mini road trip north east coast of Tas with 2 friends.

They quoted me $770 for a 4 door hatch including the $0 loss damage waiver. Without the waiver its $570.
I'd ideally like $0 loss damage waiver cause I'm doing a road trip so need peace of mind, unless anyone can recommend a third party insurance that will cover.

The other car rental sites: avis/budget/europcar/hertz has all given me quotes of 1-1.2k for the 5 days so I'm not sure why sixt is so much cheaper. Anyone have any experience dealing with them?

I'd like to save the 2-400 bucks if possible. Thanks.

used them In europe as they were the cheapest automatic rental car company i could get whilst i drove around Croatia - has no issues, due to never driving on the other side of the road i paid for the no excess extra as well

    never used them in Australia

Check out dedicated car rental insurance, sold by a number of places.

I usually pay around $8/day for dedicated insurance. Alternatively, many domestic travel insurance policies cover rental excess up to a certain amount. For 5 days, you'd pay well under $100 for a decent policy. Decline the ripoff version provided by the rental company - it's gouging plain and simple.

  • Bad (recent) experience.

Quoted $7xx for car hire. Paid that on collection day + $500 deposit for any extra kms etc.

They charged me 2 x $500 somehow and only saw the charges when I checked my CC account. I actually checked immediately after I paid and it showed the correct amount as per the payment summary, then a few hours later the second $500 appeared so this was extremely dodgy.

Called them out and they said it was a mistake and refunded the double charge when I came back.

Now, as I only used a portion of the $500 deposit due to excess kms they were to refund me $3xx which was supposed to show up in my CC in "3-5 business days" - not sure why it didn't show up together with the double charge refund which was instant.

Stuffed me around for over 2 weeks with back and forth calls between the store and head office with multiple people pushing responsibility onto another - store saying head office finance team held money, head office saying store held money.

Finally they came to the conclusion that the store (who was responsible) could not process a refund to my card for some reason and then passed me onto their own accounts team who requested my BSB & Account number to finally refund me the money.

And just for reference I just checked the Google Reviews on the branch I hired from - 1.7/5 from 6 ratings.

They only recently changed their name from Thrifty to Sixt hence the low count of ratings.

Try Apex Rental Cars. Usually my go to for cheap zero excess with unlimited km. The catch is they’re just outside the airport, but they provide a free shuttle service.

    • I’ve used Apex recently and can recommend too!

  • I want to know how you got a car for about $115 a day.

I just did a quote with Sixt and with Apex and both were about $200-250/day.

Sixt was formerly Thrifty (Division of NRMA) up until early December 2021.

Hertz now operates the Thrifty and Dollar brands.

Don't listen to the people above talking about insurance. What they haven't told you is they need to cough up the excess up front and claim it back from the third party cover, this is all well and good if you have the money to be in limbo for a few months, but if your a week to week type operator that needs to put it on a credit card @ 20%p/a then your going to be in a bit of pain.

  • Ive used them in USA & EU and was a good company to deal with, nice premium cars. There was a hack any one point where you could get a membership match which gave you a better deal, free second driver I think.

  • Used them in early December 2021 in Melbourne. Booked with Thrifty, they had just transitioned back to Sixt that weekend. Hire process was fine, new stores due to re-branding & fleet was fine. I paid for the Hyundai Kona so that I didn't have to get the bottom of the range MG they had on offer. When I got to the desk they had given me an upgrade to the higher model MG which was fine. Overall experience, same as other hire companies (comparing to Hertz, Europcar, Budget).

  • Shortage of rental cars in Tasmania has resulted in the costs as above. $100 a day is definitely up there but i guess its the lesser of two evils (the other being forking out over $1000.

If you have a credit card many will cover the excess you'd need to pay in the event of an accident with a car. (wouldn't have to take out a no out of pocket option with the hire company).

  • Used them OS with no issues.

Didn't the NRMA recently start a JV with them?

  • SIXT is just rebranded Thrifty as mentioned above. Hertz now operated Thrifty as a Tier 2 brand. So should be no issues with SIXT.
Problem is shortage of cars in Tasmania and that drives up prices anytime there is a holiday or a weekend.

  • Used them in Sydney a while back.
Returned car, got the ok, then left.
Few weeks later credit card was billed for a few hundred dollars for damage.
Had to go to vcat to get money back. Won case as the adjudicator said they couldn't find damage after they give you the all clear upon return of vehicle. How would I know if damage wasn't done post return.

    • Is this the SIXT (Kingsmill/NRMA fka Thrifty) version, or the SIXT (former JV with East Coast)?

Based on your timeframe (being charged and being able to go to VCAT with VCAT's huge backlog), it sounds like you got the East Coast version which isn't the one being discussed here.
