    Asus screen specs are often pretty poor. Low brightness and 45% NTSC color. For $1,400 I'd hope this is not the case.

    I can testify to the bargain quality of this model; so good that I got a second on special from JB at that bargain price.
    Best I've seen at that price point for my unique needs; without dedicated graphics and decent power efficient CPU.
    Compatible with Linux and the battery is good for 4 hours of video playback in Linux.
    As commented, screen is indeed… adequate.
    Speakers=average. Keyboard+touchpad=good.
    WiFi/BT=good. Webcam=average.
    All around performer and solid build.

      I recently upgraded to this from a Lenovo, which traditionally was great to me, but I was sorely disappointed with Lenovo support from a failed BIOS update from them.
      This model seems to have a good build quality which is what impressed me most.
      It's always a crap-shoot, but this model seems to be nicely over-engineered and ready to cope with my usual battering.
      If you need the touchscreen and flip at around 1.5kg and 14", this is pretty competitive IMHO.

        is there any point to this over a 4700u model? i don't really see the extra 8 virtual cores to be of much benefit on light tasks. or is the iGPU on the 5700u significantly faster?

          Got the 4xxx model end of last year when it was on special for <900 (plus officework price beat).

          Planning on giving to the kid for school when it actually start. Hope the tablet mode would work out well for school. (and hope the battery last, claims 6 hours… school wants 4minimum).

          My older model, same chassis is the 4700u and generally not a huge difference (and the 4700 has less power demand and battery lasts longer) but for intensive pure compiling jobs the 5700 does make a significant difference, everyday work I would guess not much in it.

      Like my comments above, I've not looked at the Dell's for quite some time, but I can support this model being a solid build.
      Even things like hinges and general chassis parts like corners and connectors are all solid for this price range and the weight of this model too.

      I sound like a ASUS promoter but in the past they have been iffy.
      I can say this model is tested by me to be solid for travel and home use for some time now.

    I got almost this exact model during the BF sales. Screen seems perfectly fine for use around home, I haven't tried it outside though and likely never will so YMMV. For that price it had the best specs I could find, especially for a 14" model.

    Am I the only one that won't go near anything that doesn't charge via USB C these days?

    For me it's an essential convenience - especially when travelling so you don't have to pack a heap of different chargers.

    Officeworks also have this for the same price (where it's still available). I saw one in store at Doncaster, VIC. It looks like a good machine, echo the comments on the screen brightness being an issue. Wasn't the right fit for me as I needed Thunderbolt. Also it's h e a v y if that's a factor.
