Help with RAM Upgrade Acer Nitro 5 15.6-Inch i5-11400H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX3060 6GB

I bought the recent Acer Nitro 5 deal from HN this past holidays and am a bit lost on how to proceed and upgrade the ram.

Ideally I want another stick to make it 8+8gb dual channel Any suggestions which to buy?
I can consider doing 16x2 but the cost is a bit high and I'm not sure if it is worth the price/performance + removing the existing ram? Is this worth the cost and what would you buy for 16+16gb for this laptop

16gb is good. 32gb you doing need unless you're doing audio or video or gfx or VM

    • Thanks, I just bought these and I hope it pairs up well

Did you open it up and read the specs on the existing stick?

That Kingston guide sounds right though. Most laptops seem to run JEDEC spec slow timing memory so 3200c22 for 11th gen should be it unless Acer munted it with a 2666 stick from factory or something, in which case your new stick will slow down to 2666 so meh, who cares you've doubled your ram!

With such a low speed and loose timings having the ICs not match shouldn't matter either, that's a desktop with XMP profiles problem and even then, rarely a problem at 3200.

        • Haven't opened it up yet but Ill just the gun and hopefully it matches well enough

@pao2x: I mean, in the worst case your laptop and existing stick support XMP (which only pretty expensive laptops do) and you already have a DDR4 3200C16 8GB stick at the moment, so this new one won't match perfectly and with both in there they might default back to the slower JEDEC settings the XMP stick, so at worst 2133, but more likely 2400 or 2666 - but going from single channel 3200 to dual channel even 2133 is a massive bandwidth boost anyway, so the only possible way to lose out is latency.

CPU-Z should be able to detect what the RAM in it is running at, and the JEDEC and XMP profiles the stick has.

Regardless, in that "worst case" scenario, you'll go from 8GB to 16GB and be totally stable even if the latency get worse on paper/in a benchmark, with all the benefits of double the RAM and the added dual channel bandwidth, and you'd probably never see the downsides of any latency loss for compatibility between the two sticks unless you run a memory benchmark or are trying to wring every FPS out of a competitive shooter and get dirty you only have 300FPS and not 330FPS or something

TL;DR - so long as the new stick ain't a dud, or the second slot in your laptop is faulty, you'll be fine and likely very happy

  • Google the model number and read what RAM it uses and then google where you can buy the RAM.

    • I googled it and the answers even by acer are pretty inconsistent

      • I always open it and look at the model number on the stick of ram and check ebay, gumtree and fb marketplace for a matching stick, if you are lucky someone else has upgraded theirs and is flogging off a stick cheap

often it isn't cheaper to match though and you are better off just buying another kit if you want matching sticks (ram is one of the safest components to buy second hand for a laptop/pc so I would be looking there)

  • 32GB is not worth the cost.

    Get a 8GB stick.
