Best Way to Carry A Kayak (Walking, Not on Car)

I'm going on holiday to a house that's about a 900m walk from the water, not taking the car. What's the best way to carry a 16kg sit-on kayak?

I have seen these carry straps (https://www.bcf.com.au/p/glide-kayak-carrying-strap/357912.h…) but they're out of stock at every BCF near me and aren't available for delivery, and all the ones online (Kogan, eBay) seem to take 3 weeks to be delivered and I need them by start of February.

The kayak transport wheels seem like they might not work easily on sand and seem cumbersome to carry on the kayak once you get to the water.

Any ideas? Thanks

Kayak trolley wheels are indeed the answer. They work fine on sand.

    Other variants are available.

    • I saw these in person, and I liked how light they were but they were kind of bulky - should I just carry them on the kayak in a big dry bag?

      • Pretty much. Unless the beach is private/quiet and obscure enough that you’re comfortable leaving them there with towel etc till you return.

        • I suppose I thought the carry strap might be more convenient, as the weight of the kayak is pretty light, just the shape is annoying. Maybe I should consider the wheels, does seem easier over distances.
I saw these ones in the shop (https://www.bcf.com.au/p/glide-kayak-trolley/363216.html), I think the ones you linked look better though

@AustraliaObscura: We use a trolley to take our kayak to the local beach, then use a bike lock to lock the trolley to a sturdy upright for the handrail on the stairs to the beach. I make sure it's out of everyone's way. Worked well for the last 10 or so years. My trolley is very similar to the one you've shown from BCF. The one Hybroid listed is harder to lock up.

If you are not in a hurry, carrying it won't be required…

    1. Extend the length of your holiday.
    2. Wait for Global Warming.
    3. I'm glad we had this talk.
  • I made a kayak trolley for mine. PVC pipe and some trolley wheels/axle. Left it on the beach rather than taking it along.

  • Strapped onto a trolley cart?

    • Shopping trolley cart is the ozbargain way!

  • If you have access to metal working tools then you can get two bike front wheels and join the two wheel axels together with a bar between them to hold the kayak. Go to a tip or recycling place to get some cheap front bike wheels that are the same size.

Walking 900m each way carrying your kayak with those straps will wear thin very quickly.

there is no way you want to carry a kayak 900m each way to the beach. get one of the trolleys like linked above. Just leave it on the beach with a towel and shoes. If you are really worried about it, spray paint it in some awful colour so no one will want it.

  • +1 for wheels. Carrying 16kg of awkward for 900m doesn’t sound like fun at all. Have carried a kayak probably half that several times and it quickly gets old.

Have seen kayaks out on the water with wheels strapped on the back before.

  • Ditch the kayak and get a packraft instead. <4kg, rolls up to the size of a small tent. Very stable/comfortable.
