    How do you properly seal the 10kg bags of rice between uses? So many times I've seen very, very tiny bugs that find their way into the bag. At first I thought it was just small black specks, but they are slowly moving. I think they are pantry bugs.

      Eat more rice. If the rice is there long enough it's inevitable and they were probs in the rice before you even got it home from the supermarket.

      Unless you're particularly fussy, just cook em, they're harmless. (Assuming they're run of the mill weavels)

      I use a traditional method to store bulk purchase such as Rice, Dry Dog Biscuits/foods.
      If you have a Food Vacuum Sealer; use the vacuum sealer bags and store it in a smaller pack of 1-2 kilograms in each vacuum sealed bags to keep the food freshness and keep away those bugs, ants etc.
      Only open each vacuum sealed bags when you need the rice etc.
      usually I vacuum sealed in the size of 1kg to 2 kg size, cos easy to store.

      Honestly? The best way and it's just useful for all sorts of things, pasta, biscuits, lollies, etc, is invest in a bunch of large glass stopper jars with the rubber seals.

      Another way is to repack the rice into multiple smaller air-tight bags or containers, and put them into the freezer for 24 hours, which will kill all bugs and their eggs.

      Note that many containers (Sistema etc) aren't really airtight. Best ones I've found are the Decor real-seal containers. Possibly you could wash and re-use empty Milo tins or jam jars and similar.

      I've had similar problems but only with Sunrice. Bugs all through the rice after only a few weeks. Sunrice help line were extremely rude and told me the pantry must have a bug infestation. Simply wasn't true, because the rice was stored in a container next to two identical containers with other brands of rice that didn't have any bugs after many months of storage. This has happened on three separate occasions over the past decade, so we don't buy Sunrice anymore.

      We usually buy 5kg bags of imported rice from Asian grocery stores, which last 6-8 months without issue. I'm guessing they treat rice from overseas with radiation or fumigation to kill bugs before import, but don't have the same requirements for domestic market Australian grown rice.

    Tasmanian heritage seems like it should be good but it actually sucks. Get those little 3-4 dollar bries or Camembert instead. Much better.

      Jasmine rice are usually short grain and medium grain.
      Similar to Japanese sushi rice, which is short grain.

    I couldn't buy a single bag of rice yesterday at my local Woolies, the shelves were empty. Toilet paper isle totally bare, not even rolls of paper towels.
    No pasta, flour or sugar. Limited meat, freezer section half gutted. Coles was the same.

    It's worse than it was in 2020.

    Apparently it's a 50/50 combination of logistical issues due to so many transport drivers off sick / isolating (on the east coast) and the WA border opening up again shortly which is causing stupid people to panic buy more than they need.

    Aldi on the other hand was really well stocked.

      Scarier thought, what if you're at the shops and need to use the toilet? Will there be any toilet paper there?

      Ladies, perhaps take a few sheets of TP from home, and keep them in a zip-loc bag in your handbag/purse - for emergencies. Guys, keep a roll of TP in your car, if you can hold for long enough to fetch the roll.

        When we travel overseas we always take extra tissues in our bags, just in case. If we are driving anywhere we put an extra roll in the car.

        I'm not sure it's going to get that bad. Shopping centre public toilets usually have those big commercial rolls of paper thin sandpaper that are locked up in the dispensers, but I'm sure if people get desperate they'll open them up and walk out.

          Yeah it's not. There's absolutely no issue with the commercial supply of toilet paper. There's no issue with the retail supply of toilet paper either, it's only panic buying that's emptying the shelves.

          Even my little local Coles that has empty shelves at the end of each day, has a full shelf of toilet paper in the morning. They get deliveries every day.

          And of course IGA and non Coles or Woolworths stores don't have empty toilet paper shelves in my area.

          I watched a Ben Elton sketch where he compared the action involved in trying to get the toilet paper end out of the dispensers to foreplay with a woman. It was hilarious.
