Bitwarden is free and a great alternative. Last Pass is very easy to use, but were a bit dodgy in their handling of pricing model changes so beware, I guess

    • +32

When they split everyone into the 'you can use mobile or desktop' choice, I went to bitwarden and haven't looked back.

      • +2

Same reason I changed, and my boys. Bitwarden has filled the hole nicely. In fact I like it more than last pass, because it works on everything where as last pass failed to enter info on some sites and on android.

        • The only thing that bothers me with bitwarden is its a bit backwards when signing up to a service, you need to create the login in bitwarden first, rather than bitwarden asking to remember the details you entered.

It seems so backward I'm kind of wondering if I'm missing something fundamental about it, cause that's the only thing I miss about LastPass

          • +2

@jetblack: That doesn't reflect my experience, when signing up on a new site, you use the pw generator and it goes from there, or, use the pw generator and paste it, then when it's done either it'll ask to be saved or if you are required to validate an email first then on doing that it'll ask to be saved.

            • @Sheep Whisperer: Doesn't do that on iPhone, likely because security restricts it from capturing the data within the field (it'll let a password app enter data but not suck it back out, IIRC).

Definitely works the way you say on Windows, which tends to be where I signup most new accounts. It's not particularly hard to do it in reverse though.

      • I also changed to bit warden at that time, but very much looked back. Split the family cost with my
        Family and went back.

Last Pass is very easy to use

Not my experience. I found it very clumsy and not the best experience among password managers.

  • +11

I used Last Pass for years until it was free and then moved over to Bitwarden which is free. No problems at all

    • +2

      same here

      • +2

        Ditto

        • +1

          me too

          • @daemon: I've used Lastpass and have paid for Bitwarden too.. I'm just making people aware of a 30% discount to lastpass..

  • +6

    +1 above.
Before you pay for LastPass, try bitwarden for free (or even the cheaper than LastPass paid account option)

Migrated from LastPass to bitwarden when LastPass changed their free account options, and have had no regrets or issues.
Plus, if you pay for it, you're supporting the 'little guy' and not LogMeIn :)

  • +3

I moved from LastPass to Bitwarden and have experienced no issues at all across PC or mobile. No need to pay for LP.

  • +3

I use keepass and a database file stored on onedrive. Works a treat. No need to store passwords/data on a central "passwords" database.

  • On a desktop, RoboForm is free. Been using happily for many years.

Chech the news, see how many times they have failed to protect the customers data. I would NOT suggest anyone use their services, not even if it's free.

    • +2

see how many times they have failed to protect the customers data.

got some links to back this up,

    • +3

Thanks for the neg. Didn't realise that making people aware of a 30% discount was neg worthy..

      • +1

I mean it's within the voting guidelines… Doubt its anything against you mate

      • It's not personal. They're voting on the deal.

The company has had some questionable practices in the past. They've had multiple security issues (the last thing you want in a password manager).

More importantly, being OzBargain, it's all about the money. There's a free, open source & security audited alternative available, Bitwarden.

So 30% off is still 70% more then free :-)
Don't let it put you off posting. Most people who've posted deals have had crap ones. Take it as an opportunity to learn, rather then a personal attack.

Would like to know this to! AFAIk no user password has been compromised.

I applaud vendor that are transparent and communicate what happen to my data. I think LastPass is one of them.

  • +1

bitwarden is awesome. love the fingerprint feature on android

    • +1

A feature that exists on literally every password manager?

      • +1

        Except for lastpass lol

        • +6

LastPass has had fingerprint login functionality for at least a couple of years.

  • +1

I am a huge believer in Password Managers but don’t trust LastPass.

They have had a few vulnerabilities that make me worry about their ability.

If iPhone/mac user just use apples built in one.

    Not sure for Android.

If you want a paid one go 1Password.

  • +1

See Security Issues under their Wikipedia entry.
I'm not sure I'd throw them money.

Bitwarden is brilliant. Go with Bitwarden.

  • +1

Excuse my ignorance, but why this and not just use the password manager built into Chrome?

    • Multi platform is great

    • +1

Because (Bitwarden) it stores passwords, notes, credit card stuff, etc so it works with apps, or if you're paranoid (as you should be), you just copy & paste the info in, no matter what browser/app/device you're using.

I did use lastpass until a year ago when they raised their prices yet again. If it was still $10-12 per year I would have stayed with them but moved over to Bitwarden in 2020 and haven't looked back.

Anyone going to Bitwarden I would encourage paying the no obligation $US10 per year for the premium service even if you do not use the premium functions to help pay for future developments

  • +1

Bitwarden is open source and independently audited yet my employer's overly paternalistic IT team won't let us install it for "security reasons". Argh.

  • +1

Thanks guys for great suggestion, definitely going to check out bitwarden

  • Anyone used 1Pasword? Any pros to switching over to LastPass (or Bitwarden, as seems to be popular on here)? TIA!

    • +1

I've been using 1password for years. Never had a problem with it and is constantly being developed. One of the latest features I like is the new email alias function that works with Fastmail. You can have random email address's and passwords to each site increasing security.

    • No pros to switch to LastPass.
If you are ready to pay - use 1Password.
If you are not ready to pay - use Bitwarden.

  • +1

Use the stacksocial discount code JAN15 to get another 15% off.

Brings the price of the premium subscription to $24.99 - $3.74 = $21.25.

  • +1

I still don't understand what the benefit is of a paid lastpass account vs a free one. Because it lets you share the account on Mobile and Desktop? Is that it…why do people bother?

    • +1

do you not browse sites from both your desktop and mobile devices?

  • FYI if you are looking at going for a family account and already have a premium account.
use one of the other family accounts that are not the main account then invite your main account in, that way you get the discount. As well as a credit for the remaining time.
