Just wondering what the cost would be to get a new alternator fitted, I was quoted around $500 for a Toyota Corolla 1999.
Does this seem reasonable?
Also is this something a mobile mechanic could do or would it need to be taken to a shop?

If that includes a new alternator and labour it's quite reasonable.
Google says yes.
Depends on exactly what that price covers. I don't know that model Corolla but typically, if I was changing an alternator I'd also use a new belt and replace tensioner and idler as well. If these are included along with labour in that price then it's good.
Who has determined the alternator needs replacing and why? Other options are to replace the voltage regulator and brush unit without having to remove the alternator (if possible on this model) or you can get a rebuilt unit fitted for significantly cheaper than a new unit. Second hand is even an option if you're handy and goto the self serve wrecking yard and DIY.
Exactly
1999 Corolla - 20 plus years old. New alternator - another 20 years life.
Will you keep the car that long?
a 1999 reconditioned unit is listed here (You might have to check exact model details to be sure)
https://www.onlineautoparts.com.au/products/ZPN-38929_______… probably $100 all up.
Get a mate who can wield a spanner - install for nix. A mechanic probably $100-150 -get a quote
If you have even basic mechanical skills you could swap yourself in >30min. You might get one for as little as $200 on eBay.
OP now wants to get a used car:

It's about right. Wouldn't bother doing it myself for something this low cost.
Sounds about right.
