Moving to Canada - Freight Forwarder for Excess Luggage?

I am planning to move back to Canada in the next 2-3 months.

I don't have enough stuff to hire a moving company but too much to easily take as extra luggage. I have a 4 guitars and 4 full size suitcases and a bicycle. I could live with selling the bicycle but the guitars are fairly unique and would be difficult to replace. Qantas charges like $200 per extra piece of luggage to North America but I was told there are cargo companies that would be much cheaper.

Any recommendations?

  • A courier would probably be cheaper if you have 9 large pieces of luggage.

    • +1

Not sure about that. Couriers have all massively increased their prices with COVID. I noticed pack and send offers a service for this though so I am going to check what they would charge.

  • I've used both Conroy and OSS Worldwide. Stuff arrived fine. There'll be negative reviews on both of those companies.

Thing is they handle the shipment from Australia and then put it on a boat, and then it's over to a different contracted company at the destination. Then it's out of their control. Measure the volume of your shipment and get a quote.

    • Thanks!. Sounds a bit scary and would likely take months to arrive? But if it is priced right, it might be worth it with insurance.

  • Have you checked air freight companies? Either the ones near major airports or in industrial areas in your state.

In my experience, if you drop off the stuff/items at their offices it is cheaper than asking them to pickup from your place.

I wouldn’t send a valuable instruments via sea.

    • I am in a rural town so those companies would be limited. I am thinking I might need to rent a car or van and drive to the main hub city and dropping it off directly. They get you with the one way rental charges, or they get you with the excess luggage. It seems hard to figure out a good path.
