They smell really bad when you first get it. Takes quite a bit of time for the smell to go away.
Mine was pleasant. Just smelt like rubber. Sort of like a tyre shop

Dont know if good but I'm using a gaming playmat right now as a mousepad. If you're an elite PC gamer you probably need something made for the job.

Great mats - love my mm350. No fraying at the edges anywhere.
My cheapo brandless mouse mate hasn't frayed either. It's got an overlocked edge that's been fine for a few years.
I have one of these and can confirm they are excellent!
