Solar Inverter Causing Interference to Wi-Fi?

I installed a 6.6kw solar system recently and ever since my internet just dropped out every 15min during the day - but at night everything is working just fine. Funny thing is that the internet is still broken even if the inverter, main solar switch on the switchboard and isolators are all completely turned off. I also tried unplugging the wifi dongle that came with the inverter, no luck.

It's a Sungrow inverter, anyone has experienced something similar or got any advice?

Thanks in advance!

what sort of router and technology you use, first port of call is get another router to test it out

  • good point - that's what I am going to do next. I am using Google wifi, been working fine for over two years plus. It's so puzzling that the network works just fine after dark… it's only dropping out during the day.

    • Using Google router severely limit your troubleshooting options, you can't even test if the wire internet is affected in the same way to make sure if the problem is at the internet connection itself.

How close is the inverter to the router?

We've got a sungrow and no issues at all with WiFi signal

    • They are along the same wall, about 2m apart max. My friend also has a sungrow and they haven't had any issue. I am hoping that it has nothing to do with the inverter. Having to change the unit is going to be so much work (negotiating with the solar company etc)

Unless the off switch doesn't actually turn it off, the wifi problem is not caused by your inverter or solar system.

    • Thanks, that's also what I suspected. It's unlikely that the switch didn't work properly - i.e. source of interference should be something other than the inverter…

Could try a different modem/router and see if the pain persists

    • I will give that a try. But wifi is working just fine at night…that's so strange

What is the model of your wifi router?
You could check for interference using any wifi analyser all. See if you need to change channel.

    • It's a Google wifi, can't manually adjust to 2.4ghz or 5ghz. I'd be quite disappointed if this relatively new router has failed, but will try my hands on a different to test things out. Thanks!

    Probably not your inverter.

As above change your router to see if it is the router.

Check what else you got that is running during the day. Remember there is comments that the LG microwaves knock out bluetooth (not sure about wifi).

    • Thanks, I am convinced now that it's not !y inverter. What else is on during the day…hmm… Nothing is newly installed other than the solar. But I'll keep trying, maybe a new router, turn off all appliances, or even speak to the construction site across the road (and neighbours if they are experiencing the same thing)

Also download onto your phone WiFi Analyser to see if someone else has their router on the same channel.

If your neighbour and you are both on channel 13 then it might cause a problem.

      • construction site across the road

If they're welding, this could well be the culprit. Some other power tools might put out some RF interference too.

What did the solar installers say when you contacted them to see if they'd had issues elsewhere with similar units?

    • Haven't done that yet, but good suggestion! They should be able provide some self help advice or do something about it. Will give that a go!

check internal modem diagnostics, will tell you speed and if disconnected from internet. could be problem with internet wiring to your home

    • Used the Google wifi app to do that, but the app didn't have that kinda advanced function or it is hidden for advanced users maybe. Will look into that! The interment and mesh tests did come back as working though (when network was actually working). Other times I have received notifications from various apps that say network "abnormal"…

  • Not related to solar inverter, my internet used to drop out because my router was pinging the internet provider too often and the internet connection was affected. I had to reduced the ping frequency on my router.

    • Ahhh looks like it's time to get a new router or find a way to adjust the settings…

  • Why don't you try moving the router first to see if it makes any difference?

True, it's the cheapest method and I should try that first. P.S. I'm star struck replying to the one and only JV!!

  • Thank you all for the replies.

Looks like I will need to do something with the router, maybe get a new one. But I thought it's strange that the internet works fine at night like nothing happened, that's why I thought it was something other than the router. Any thoughts?

    • But I thought it's strange that the internet works fine at night like nothing happened

Could have something to do with heat on the wires…

      • Possibly the router overheating. JV on to something

  • 2 year is when the power adaptor starts failing in my experiences. Sad thing is, it still happens even though we replace the adaptor once it started. I've been using relatively cheap brands though, like TPLink, etc.

Another cause could be too many smart devices connected into the router, but it might be not as you said it won't make any issue during night.

Or your password was too easy so your neighbours are using…? Can't be…
