Can somebody help clear this up for me, is this better or worse than a goon bag?

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_84913/oban-14-year-old-s…

$79.99 @ Dan's, so if you are willing to spend $3 more you can pick it up from a heap of places …

  • anyone tried this before? would this be better than something like Johnny black label?

    • Much better than Johnny Black.

    • +3

Well it will be quite different from JW black.

This is a single malt, that means you will have a chance to note the flavours/smells over a blended whiskey; blended whiskeys tend to use cheaper/younger batches of single malts (usually 2-4 varieties).

Firstly, if you haven't tried a single malt before and don't drink them neat. Don't go spending $80 on a bottle of this to mix. It is a waste. It is stupid.

Secondly, if you are not used to peaty/smokey whiskey, I would not suggest you try this off-the-bat.

Lastly, here's an article that may interest you, if you wish to learn more about blended/single malts etc.

      • This is a Highland SIngle Malt not Islay or Speyside. I can't comment on it personally but I'd imagine it's not a smokey/peaty bite like most think it will be deep and rich

        • Edit: Misread the heading, that was aroma not taste.

    • guys thanks very much for the responses. Especially Telios. very informative.

14 years old - isn't that too young to drink?

  • +2

single malt is completely different to johnny black …

if you drink johnny straight, then make the switch to single malt and you'll never look back …
if you're drinking johnny with cola, you may as well drink beam or cougar :)

    • +2

I really hate it when people say this. Johnny and coke is NOTHING like Beam or cougar. You can drink different things with coke and get different tastes. you put a glass of Chivas and coke and another of Beam and coke in front of anyone and they can't tell you the difference then their tastebuds must be seriously messed up.

      • +3

It's more the fact that if you're mixing, you should get the cheap stuff… Don't go for the Black label, when the a Red will taste almost identical when mixed ..

        • No, it doesn't. I hate Red and coke, but love black and coke, the difference is very clear. No I wouldn't mix anything over $50, but the say you can't tell the difference between two cheapies is foolish.

  • Oban is one of my favourite single malts and I highly recommend it to whisky lovers. BenMHarvey is correct - it is a Highland Malt and not at all smokey/peaty. It is however very smooth, almost creamy with a great depth of flavour.

You'll easily find Oban for ~$80 so this offer doesn't represent a massive saving. But if you want an excuse to try a fantastic whisky, then go right ahead…;)
