How Can I Cool My Small Backyard Studio?

I am hoping to find a decent cooler / air con for my backyard studio. It’s not easy to use anything that sits in the window, as it’s a ‘room within a room’ build. Also can’t do a reverse cycle system in the wall for the same reason. And finally, it’s used for music composition, so ideally it would be something that doesn’t make too much noise.

I am currently looking at the portable coolers they have at Bunnings etc, but reviews of them seem to be mixed (mostly saying they’re noisy and don’t cool very well).

Hoping to get any recommendations! Thanks

Seems weird you could use a reverse cycle, given its just a few pipes through the wall to the compressor?

    • There are two walls with insulation and two frames and three layers of plaster (and weatherboards) in between.

Still don't see why it couldn't be done - it's just some more insulated copper pipe to run through the walls in question.

The compressor for one of my units runs through the external wall, up to the roof cavity, over a walkway inside the roof and then out into a room unit. I can't see why punching through your wallet can't be done?

That's easier than drilling through brick walls which is done regularly.

You'll want to not buy the cheapest reverse cycle inverter split system if noise is an issue.

So you don;t want to put in reverse cycle so the majority of the noise is outside, but your requirement is "doesn’t make too much noise."

The other option is a portable air con and have allot of noise.

    Solved… quiet, cool and cheap

Seriously get a split system, installers won’t care even if you got a room within a room within another room. Drill hole, run pipe, simple

  • Seems you don't understand reverse cycle, the head (bit that blows air) and compressor (thing that does the heat transfer) are separate components, they can literally be 50m apart joined with some small pipes that go through the walls (no matter how many of them) around corners, up or down multistory dwellings, etc …

Portable coolers are 1) extremely loud (kind of defeats the purpose of 32 layers of wall for sound proofing), 2) Don't work effectively at all 3) Needs a drain pipe anyway 4) Cost as much as reverse cycle (without installation) … portables with dual hoses work far better than the single drain hose versions, but they are not permitted to be sold in AU anymore :/

    • Thanks! This is really helpful. And you're right - I didn't understand reverse cycle. Thanks.
