Crucial M4 SSD Hard Drive - Bug Report - Stops Working after 5184 Hours *FIX Available*

Folks, quite a few of you have bought these SSDs from deals here, suggest you upgrade your Firmware asap:

"Just a heads up for anyone else that is running the Crucial M4 SSD's in their boxes.

We've had a couple 'fail' and on liasing with Crucial, they have identified that after ~ 5000hours, there is a bug in the firmware which causes the units to shutdown after 5184 hours running….

A simple firmware update is all that is required to get the units working again."

Hopes this helps someone.

  • Simple firmware update… for some maybe.

Sadly the auto updater for Win7 didn't work for me (and a lot of other people it seems). I consider myself reasonably tech savvy, but still spent hours getting the firmware to update manually.

All I can say is prepare for some frustrating times if you embark on this…

    • Worked ok for me.
Different move to the instructions I extracted the file to C:\ then ran it.

    • havent seen the versions available, but i believe you can just use a linux 'live' disc to patch too if there is a linux updater?

  • How do you tell how many hours its been running?

    I used http://ssd-life.com/eng/download-ssdlife.html
And I'm guessing Work Time of 4608hrs is the same value and not just calculated from the date it was installed.

Crystal Disk Info is another http://download.dkszone.net/crystaldiskinfo-monitor-hard-dis…

  • use Speed Fan, I use that to monitor temp primarily, but already has features for HDD and such.

  • It has some serious problems.

The new firmwares are twice as slow as the previous ones. They won't work from a Mac off a USB stick, you have to use optical media (many people, like me, use this drive in place of their optical one, leaving us SOOL).
