ipad for overseas trip

Hi, so my parents are heading overseas and want to buy an ipad to take with them. They said it doesnt have to be the latest model as they will only be using it for basic functions, email, ,maps etc. Im very out of touch with ipads now, so i dont know what is considered a good price, model etc, can anyone give me some advice and recommend a good place to buy one?? Would be very much appreciated :)

    Approx, $999 brand new?

    just got my parents an ipad 3 at the apple store for $498 (price matched Big W).
    they'll also get about $45 back from TRS at the airport :)

    if they're happy with the older ipad 2 you can get that for about $398…if you get 10% back at TRS, that's a pretty decent price!

    I would steer them towards an android tablet.

    The stock standard Map application in android allows you to pre-cache an area up to 10miles in radius and you can keep up to a few areas in cache. That way you don't have to use up data, especially while you were away overseas($$$).
    Also if you only get the wifi ipad it doesn't have a GPS receiver so it's not real good as a navigation device.

    My android tablet was proven to be really useful during my last trip to Japan for 2 weeks. Would be lost and missed my trains if I didn't have one. Almost all hotel rooms there have free internet, all I had to get was a cheap wifi pocket router and I can plan all my trip in my hotel room

    Buy the iPad no more than 30 days before departure, and claim the GST at the airport. (Tourist Refund Scheme: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp)
    Big W and Target have good price,iPad 2 is probably good enough, but if they can pay a little more then new one!
    Don't buy it at the airport, buy it earlier, so your folks can have the iPad fully charged, download all the apps, get use to the iPad… etc BEFORE the holiday.
