100K Major Service Due with Some Repairs - Got Quoted ~ $1300. Is This Reasonable?

I have a 2012 Nissan (MY2010) just shy of 100K KMs. Rear shocks weeping since last 2 services so decided to get those replaced along with the major service.

The logbook service will include iridium spark plugs replacement, cooling system flush, etc the full works. I have been told it's a timing chain so no replacement needed there. Got quoted between $1290 - $1325 by NRMA and Ultratune. I do know one good independent mechanic but they still seem to be closed on new year holidays so couldn't get a quote front them. Last few services done at Ultratune and they have done a reasonably good job.

Is this quote reasonable or should I keep looking?

Is this a reasonable quote YES or should I keep looking Yes.
I'm confused Yes I'd keep looking

    • Tried fixing the poll options but didn't work. So consider YES = Reasonable Quote and NO = Keep Looking

      • OK NO
Ask them how long in the shop they'll lie and over quote to work out your labor time.
Ask the same at next shop
        What's their hourly rate?

  • Is it a dualis? What brand shocks, and how large a part of the quote are they? You would need a full list of what is being done, and a breakdown of pricing, to say whether it's good or not.

    • Yes a Dualis.. high level list is basically the 100K logbook service plus rear shock absorber replacement. Spark Plug replacement, Oil and Oil Filter Replacement, Cooling system flush and coolant replacement and usual checks. Shocks brand would be KYB.

      • +1

If kyb, shocks and fitment is probably $3-400? Plugs $150 or so fitted. Oil and filter and all regularly checks, I suppose around $220-250 these days? Coolant flush and appropriate coolant, maybe $250?

About a grand going off what you've listed. You sure the fuel filter isn't being done? I can't remember the interval for that, but that will add a reasonable amount, as it's an in tank filter.

        • I think you normally do the plugs+airbox filter+fuel filter together.

          • @Montyjpm: There is no "normally" with log book servicing. All manufacturers do things at different intervals. Some of them do it all at once, some spread it out. Air filter is done far more often than on tank fuel filter and iridium plugs. Non in tank filter is done more often than in tank. It varies a lot.

        • The log book says Fuel Filter so I am assuming that's being done too… I will reconfirm but assume it's included for now.

          • +2

@bigbadboogieman: If you add the fuel filter and fitment to my approx $1000, you end up in the ballpark of the quotes you have received.

            • @brendanm: Thanks

            • @brendanm: Okay here the update. I got my car serviced at Ultra Tune today. They said they couldn't change the fuel filter for my car because that comes in a full Fuel Pump assembly so they can't change the filter only. The whole fuel pump assembly would be changed when/if there are any problems with it. Everything else was done total $1299.

              Replaced/Renewed:
              Spark plugs
              Coolant
              Brake Fluid
              CVT Fluid
              Oil and Oil Filter
              Pollen Filter
              Rear Shocks

Checks as per logbook/major service for everything else.

Is this quote reasonable or should I keep looking?

You have two quotes within $35 on a ~$1300 job….. At a wild guess its about what its going to cost, but sure get a 3rd quote and see how it compares.

  • My car's got a timing belt, and the way it is replaced, as it has to be, regularly, is by lifting the complete engine and gearbox out of the car, replacing the belt on the end of the engine, and re-fitting the engine and gearbox. I wish my belt-replacement services were even close to $1300.

    • Sounds like Euro.

      • Can't think of anything off the top of my head that requires this. Closest would be an sw20 MR2, but you can do them with the engine in place, it's just not fun.

    • What car?

  • NGL Dualis' are strangely unreliable, weird for a Nissan.

my major for a Kia came to roughly $1000 ($1500 including tyres).

But with shocks that need replacing $1300 would be fair i feel.

My Audi's timing chain is an engine out jobby and will likely be $2000k or so

    • +1

I actually found my Dualis to be completely reliable. Thankfully it has not given me any trouble touchwood.

I am getting the shocks replaced as a precautionary measure because they have come up on two - three separate services otherwise I could potentially get away without replacing them.

Does the Q7 have a rattle at startup? Hope you don't have the dreaded upper sump oil leak as well.

      • Nah she's only at 145k so have at least another 50k in her before doing it, but not looking forward to it.

As for the upper sump oil leak, she is leaking oil, but it's barely a drip when i garage her. I don't think it's from that, guessing that's expenno too?

        • The chain will be more than $2k, parts are about $1k if you get them from Europe.

Yeah upper sump requires basically all the same work as the timing chain, plus more. Best to do them both at once if you do get excited.

          Get your injector seals sorted?

          • @brendanm: Yep, 1 hour of fiddling around and she came good.
I can see how you got it down to a 15 minute jobby.

So much better than handing over $600+ to the mechanic.

            • @Drakesy: Nice one, yep sure beats paying someone else by the hour for something "difficult" 👍

After an hour of fiddling, I bet she did come good! 🤣

  • Get a price from your indie after they open up again.

    • Got serviced at Ultra Tune today. Had called the Indie and asked for a quote. They had said they would call back but never did. They probably will in the next couple of days when they wake up.
