Getting Custom Artwork and Printing It?

Hey guys!

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but my partner and I are moving into a new place soon and want to get a custom bit of artwork for it. How to Train Your Dragon is my favourite film, so we were thinking where our computer desks are going to be, we're going to have our desks next to each other. Hers is white, mine will be black, and we were going to try get an HTTYD artwork for the place (I was thinking something like a Night Fury in side profile while flying, but the back half is Toothless and his tale, and the front half is Light Fury, and the midpoint of our desks would be where the division between them is, with her stuff being white and my stuff being black)

Unfortunately, I've never gotten any sort of custom artwork before, so was wondering if anyone here has? Are there specific sites you'd recommend to get done? Should I pay multiple people to create the artwork for me, then choose the best one that suits? Or should I stick with one person who has a "realistic" art style, and work with them to edit it to fit how we want it to look?

Secondly, once the artwork is done, where would you guys recommend I get it printed? We'll want this to be big, and also the main artwork above our computer for years to come, so something good quality - should we print it on canvas, or on something like an A2 poster which we can then frame? Would Officeworks be a good enough place to print, or are there dedicated printing places around we should go to? What would be everyone's suggestions?

Thanks in advanced!

Depends on you budget - You can commission multiple pieces, but everyone I know that does this just finds someone who does a particular style they like and commissions them to do it. (etsy, instagram)
Often they will show you progress photos of them during the process in which you should be able to voice what you like and don't like.

Officeworks should be fine to print. I've used them for Art School, and Graphic designers use them (unless they need something done with a specific process or material).

It sounds like a very cool idea :)
How to Train Your Dragon still makes me tear up a little when I watch it haha

edit: Canvas or Print, I think would depend on your taste and decor. Personally I prefer print for photos because I think it looks cleaner, but that's just me

Thanks for the tips! I don't have instagram, but may get it to find someone who can do it - though etsy is a good starting point too, so I'll check that out! I guess once it's done I can scale it to whatever size I need to for printing too, which will be good!

And since I've had this idea, I can't stop thinking about how epic it's gonna look - so excited we're getting it :). It's such a great movie, and even after seeing it so many times, I also tear up a little each time :P

  • Not sure if you want to keep the art work out just have prints and products of it, because you can find stuff like this and get different products printed with HTTYD art.

I've got an illustrator friend who is heavy into HTTYD stuff. I've sent her a link to this thread. She's pretty busy at the moment but I'll let you know if this is something she would have the time to do for you (at whatever rates she would quote) … If you're both interested I'll send you a link to their pages.

Definitely doesn't hurt! Especially if she's already into HTTYD stuff - could definitely be good :-)! Thanks!

Their house is full of the stuff. She's a bit busy, but I'll DM you a link to her website shortly.

HTTYD has a soft spot in this house too, my wife walked down the aisle to a song from the soundtrack. :)

That's amazing! What song did she walk down the aisle to :-)?

My favourite is definitely forbidden friendship from the first movie - but all of the songs are amazing, as is the entire series!

@Opaquer: For the dancing and the dreaming. I'm a terrible husband, I had to ask. :D

@holoz0r: That's such a good song, and a great choice to walk down the aisle!
