Trying to Sell Laptop on Marketplace - Is It a Bad Time Right Now?

Hi Team,

Trying to sell this laptop - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305668
Metabox - i7 7700HQ + 1060 6GB 16GB RAM - solid 60 fps gaming laptop + fan + bag

I've reduced to $700 but keep getting low ball offers of $400. I can't find a single 1060 6GB laptop on the marketplace for the same price. Is it just a bad time? Should I wait for people to go back to school and parents worrying about laptop for school/uni and put it up then?

Not in a hurry to sell I just know 3060 laptops I've seen here hit $1200ish. Has this laptop lost it's value?

why would someone pay $700 for a used laptop when for a few hundred more, they could get a new one? i think thats the mindset of your buyers

    • why would someone pay $700 for a used laptop

      The Russians would pay more.

      • +3

Nigerian will pay even more and they would organize pickup so you don't have to worry about shipping :)

I have 2 computers for sale right now on facebook and Gumtree

Unlike OP mine are in popular price range of $100 for complete HP system and $200 for a powerful Mini-Dell Core i5 with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD
Normally these would sell very quickly - within 1 to 3 weeks

However I'm getting practically no inquiries right now

      Hence to answer OP's question

YES, its a very quiet time to sell computers on Marketplace

But also to confirm with Big Lenny above that selling a used PC for $700 on marketplace is a very tall ask at any time

Then you have all the Post- Christmas ands New year sales and there are great deals to be had right now.

      Suggest OP tries eBay instead
They are much more savvy on eBay and will recognize a good deal if indeed it is one

Yes, that laptop has lost its value.

Admittedly $700 for a GTX 1060 isn't a terrible price, but the i7-7700HQ isn't a great gaming processor in this day and age.

RTX really has taken a hold and unfortunately that means GTX isn't really worth the money when RTX cards on brand new systems are only a couple of hundred dollars more than what you're asking with a warranty. Unfortunately the market dictates the value and in this case you might have to bite the bullet and take a hit. $400-$600 would be fair for this laptop.

The longer you leave it the more it'll depreciate. The secondhand covid gaming pc bubble has well and truly run it's course.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I've just use Ozb and the marketplace to dictate the price. Considering there are 1060 6gb alone going for $400 I would've thought the CPU/RAM/M2 drive would've been worth something.

1060 in desktop is different from the 1060 in laptop tho. but yeah laptops generally drop really fast in value

      • +2

You always get lowball offers when selling on Gumtree or Marketplace. I think $600-$700 is a decent price. just be patient

        • +2

Yeah might be more inclined to $600 now. I'll just mine on it and earn $1 a day until it sells or dies.

      • +3

1060 6GB alone for $400 are cards that fits into a PC and are MUCH FASTER than the laptop 1060 version (not to mention that 6GB standalone cards are still being purchased by miners, propping the price up even more, have a look at the 3GB version - which is still faster than your laptop GPU)!

You can NOT equate a laptop GPU with a standalone PC card, the performance difference is often 200% greater on PC or more :/

        • The GTX 10-series is a bit of an exception to the usual “Desktop gpu is much faster than laptop” rule. I believe the 1060 desktop is within 10% faster than laptop variant. Similar story with GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1070
It’s why Nvidia ditched the “m” at the end of mobile variant cards (example 970m vs 970), they were similar enough.
Unfortunately it’s not been the case in successive generations. I believe the gap in performance is widening with each new generation

    • Suggest OP check COMPLETED SALES on eBay for an idea of achievable value

The gaming market is very small compared with rest of market
As a general use PC its probably still an excellent option

Parents won't be buying an out of warranty no-name brand.

  • +1

    I'll give you $410

    • +2

OK - bank transfer it and I promise I'll post the laptop once the money clears in my account. 😊

      • +3

Done. I've PM'd you a copy of the payment receipt. Sorry it's so blurry but my phone is playing up.

        I'll post the laptop

Perhaps consider eBay. Considering the cheapest 1060 laptop is $799 + $17 postage, you might end up ahead even after paying the exorbitant fees (I think about 13.5% after GST?)

    • +1

I haven't sold anything on ebay for years… do you get pinged for GST now?

      • +1

Yeah, you pay 10% GST on the value of eBay fee. It was introduced a while ago.

      • +2

you'll be slugged about 13.5% worth of fee's on the total sale, including shipping.

eBay I have to admit, have the best buyers, but their fee's most of the time is a deal breaker.

    • Post on Gumtree the take up offer to list on eBay for 30c final valuation fee. Sold an XPS 13 for $1300 recently that way and pocketed $1299.70

      • +1

        those promo's are now gone.

Is It a Bad Time Right Now?

It's not going to increase in monetary value over time…

So, it's bad time now, then it gets worse.

    • +1

I mean its just after xmas, everyone has their gifts etc trying to sell old stuff before they go back to work / uni etc and oh wait ppl need laptops for uni (do they still or just use tablets?).

That's what I mean by wrong time.

  • You need to list on multiple channels. And no I would not consider this a bad time.

  • Just keep the faith oh normally I list a bit higher than the price you want.

I would try to get best picks and list RRP. And all that info.

You have to hope for a sucker.

  • +3

It's a niche product, there won't ever be high demand for it. I imagine most students will run for the hills when they see what battery life it has left after 4 years (unless you put a new battery in it, but even then it didn't have much to begin with).

When you can pickup this for $900 it makes your laptop for $700 seem overpriced. Although that laptop is a bargain price.

    • -5

Damn that is a bargain, didn't consider it'd be up against 3050 laptops. Cheers for the advice. Hoping mainstream facebook goers aren't aware of these bargain laptops and just the standard overpriced Gerry Harvey crap

    • +2

Just realised that no ones posted that deal yet.
      Should chuck it up

      • +1

I stole it from the top comment in this post - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/673493 - that thread didn't seem to get much interest. I'm still guessing it's a niche product.

I also can't bear the thought of supporting HN, even for a bargain… But I'd spend the extra $100 on the 11800h, the cheaper one was just a more comparable price to OP's.

  • +1

I'm with the other guys, I wouldn't risk it for a 5 year old PC when there's new and faster with warranty for 200 more…

  • +1

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/672007

The top laptop here was brand new and absolutely superior to your laptop for 270 more. You're comparing your laptop with a 1060 to other 1060s. That's like expecting to sell a 2010 model car for 5000 when the 2015 model also sells for 5000 but is superior.

Laptops and their GPUs aren't in such short supply like desktop GPUs

    • True CPU benchmark shows that the Ryzen is 3x better didn't know that. God damn. Truth hurts.

  • People are in a spend spend spend mentality…. you could be lucky
