New Air-Conditioning Not Working

Hi all,

we had a new 7kw diakin reverse cycle split system installed 2 months back. Within a few days( only used maybe few hours) it stopped working and showed error code on remote. Contacted installer and they lodged a warranty claim with diakin and daikin sent a technician following week. He found that due to improper flaring there's a gas leak. So, he just left saying it's the installer's fault and they should fix it. I said the same to the installer. Their tech came and fixed it (refilled gas) the following week. But last week before new year we switched on and it's blowing warm air. It shut down showing an error code. I called them no answer so, emailed them stating the same. No answer yet. What should I do? Is it fixable? We boiled in this mini heat wave in Melbourne. The daikin unit comes with 5 year warranty and installation company 6 year warranty.

Please advise 🙏

Contact the company again now everyone’s back to work.

Escalate through VCAT if no resolution.

    • Thanks. I will do that.

Did you tell the tech who refilled it to fix the flare leak before refilling? Ring them again and tell them to fix it quick before their name show up in Google review.

    • Yes, i forwarded them the email from daikin stating that. They know that.

no you told the company… not the tech. The company probably just told him to go out and check it out

        • Before leaving he said he has done a pressure test, checked all connections and refilled gas. He spent 45 min doing that. Can it be fixed/repaired permanently or does the whole unit be replaced?

How could anyone here possibly know the answer? You need to chase up the installer to rectify this.

            • @Presence: Yes. fair enough, I will contact them again today.

@ozzy1: "Can it be fixed/repaired permanently or does the whole unit be replaced?"
I'm guessing it is fixable because it sounds just like an install we had.
original plan was to install a man hole to aid in original install and ongoing access. day of install they said, not needed because they can do install without it (we had agreed to a small sum which in the end was not charged for the manhole).
anyway, later that first summer we have low gas, they send out someone who did a top up and said yeah it's all good.
next summer same thing (we only need cooling in our bedroom if 3+ string of says over 30deg).
this time it was arranged to have a manufacturer (Daikin too) chosen sub tech (of course under the whole "if there's not a problem you get charged" spiel). This independent tech determined dodgy join and identified the location as being near where the manhole was to go. Get back in touch with installer who sent a tech (someone who had not visited before). I was home and during the discussion I mentioned the manhole decision and his response was "bloody idiots" talking about his co workers. He then goes to the hardware for the manhole kit, returns fits it and then proceeds to address the leak (no charge for manhole) been 7 odd years since and no further leaks
            .

            • @Nugs: Thank you very much. It's a relief that it's fixable. Much appreciated. That's all i needed.

@ozzy1: A flare leak is just a leak in the piping because a join wasn't done properly. It definitely doesn't require the whole unit to be replaced. It just requires the join to be redone properly, and the unit refilled with gas to replace what has leaked out.

A flare fitting leak can often be eliminated by re-tightening the nut. But in some cases, the problem stems from a tube end that has been excessively compressed. In that case, no matter how tightly screwed the flare fitting is, leaks will continue to occur. So either the tubing or the flare nut will need to be completely replaced.

            • @GordonD: Thank for the info. technician is coming this Friday. I will ask him if the tubing/flare nut needs to replaced.

Thanks for getting this right. Unfortunately that's my only advice.

  • Wow $3200 is pretty cheap!

    • Definitely, given the multiple visits required.

      • Multiple visits because they stuffed up the install.

    • It's not cheap. System could be purchased for 1750 to 1850 online including delivery and 850 is standard back to back installation. Total around $2700. But went with that company "supply & install" because of word of mouth.

Oh a split system. My bad. Yes that is not that cheap after all

        • I thought you were being sarcastic and I wanted to inflate it a little without saying OP really got screwed.

I am quite happy with my bottom of the barrel 2.5kw/3kw Hisense split system I got for $450 after cash back 2 months ago. It was so cheap I bought 2.

      • I have a 7.1kW Panasonic, $1300 buy and $600 install. Has not missed a beat in the last 4 years

        • Now 7.1 panasonic costs like $1900 min & 850 to 1200 install. Previously manufacturers offered giftcard cashbacks or something like that. Now nothing and apparently there's a shortage of split systems due to chip shortage. Covid tax i guess & also due to shortage of staff, these installers are using trainees.

@ozzy1: Or course it's expensive in January where every one wants an aircon.
The time to buy and install and aircon is 3 or more months before summer. Better sales wayyyy before summer.
