LDV D90 SUV Any Good ? 7 Seater under $34k with 5 Years Warranty

I was wondering what you guys think of LDV D90 7 seater SUV. Its looks like a good offering with all the bells and whistle for only around $34k driveaway. 5 years warranty.

I was looking at buying a decent large 7 seater SUV (used/new) - but everything is so damn expensive. Outlander/Xtrail are way too small. The Japanese and Korean cars are well over $55k- $60k.

    LDV = NO

    • LDV Vans are doing quite well in Australia though. MG cars too. And apparently MG and LDV has same parent company - only their importers are different in Australia.

      • +3

Correct they are doing well… because they have stock where as quality manufacturers don’t. Those needing a new car quickly are sadly out of luck.
As someone who has seen what can go wrong with them my only advice is stay well clear.
Whether you choose to take that advice is up to you.

        • i kind of wonder how the various councils, aust post and the tradies are doing with the base ldv van

you see heaps around syd. - enough so you see entire companies decking them out in liveries and technicians racks and shit

i can see why… i mean with friggin Hiaces and iLoads pretty much $50k?

if you can get buy at $30k… and you get actually get vehicles

          • @tonyjzx: its the same in Victoria at the moment. Everywhere you go you will see heaps of LDV Vans. They are basically half the price of the other Vans

          • +1

@tonyjzx: Actually LDV vans are very well regarded in UK and even NZ.

To the OP: have a good long test drive and a very close inspection and then decide if it is worth it or not.

Expect a bit less, pay a LOT less.

            • @LFO: They are. Previously called as Leyland DAF Vans - LDV was a British brand - purchased by SAIC Corp China. I remember all those old trucks with Leyland logos on them. Same thing with MG now bought by SAIC. Volvo by Geely - China. Ssangyong by Mahindra (India).

              • @azhar7772: mahindra no longer own ssangyong

Keen to read in full detail what happened, when and why.
To learn rather than to be scared.

          Thanks

  • MIC on side and TSLA on the other side will slowly kill the other automakers.

    The future looks good.

I was looking at buying a decent large 7 seater SUV

Then why are you looking at ldv?

    • haha nice one. I know my budget is well under what is considered decent. LDV D90 is being sold in Asia as MG Gloster and reviews looked quite good and I was quite surprised in the price difference. $34k for a new car Vs min $60k for a Japanese car.

      • +1

Ldv are shitheaps, that's why they are cheap.

There seem to be a lot of complaints about rust issues with LDV commerical vehicles. Even though yours is a passenger vehicle they all come from th same factory and made out of same sheet metal so I'd stay away.

    • -1

Yeah I did read about that. Some earlier models were having rust issues if you stay near beach / salt water. I think it might be a bad batch of the contaminated steel. SAIC makes around 5 million cars per year. I don't think they can get away if their cars were having rust issues.

The D90 isn't selling much it seems. While it's a quality car imo and I'm happily buying China made cars, parts availability could be an issue for less popular models. If a bumper / windscreen needs replacement, how soon can this be delivered? That's something I'd factor into ownership desision. I'd get replacement car coverage to mitigate this risk.

    • that is a valid point. I do get 50% off with my car insurance (ex employee discount) so might check before I decide to buy anything. There are only a couple of vids on Youtube on LDV D90. One is from John Cadogan ….. he hates this car. (I found an earlier video oh him praising LDV though) Idiot might not have got paid from this brand. Is it just our mindset that we dont like Chinese cars / resale value in Australia ? I mean most of the Japanese cars I have owned have been recalled for Airbag issues / VW emission issues etc.

From my experience, they are poorly made, with bad quality control, and no care for the end product. The send them out of the factory, while knowing that there are still issues.

        • I had this debate with couple of mates recently. One of them was saying that if they are selling in Australia - that means they are safe - complies with Australian Standard and the warranty should take care of it if something was to go wrong. Gave me an example of Jeep. Complete shitboxes with cheap interiors being sold in Australia and people still buy them (newer Jeeps are much better). Nissan Pathfinder 2013- most of them had shitty gearboxes. From what I think my drive is going to be less than 8-10k a year and to spend $60+ is a bit too much for me.

@azhar7772: That's fine. I've shared my experience on here before, I was offered a job as warranty manager for a Foton branch, the problems they had were astonishing. The cars should never have been sold. Have worked on great wall and ldv, great wall are just crap, ldv were crap, with ridiculous parts pricing.

You do you, but I would buy a good used vehicle.

Honestly not sure why people start these threads when they've already decided to buy, regardless of what anyone says.

            • @brendanm: You are right mate. I might have gone off too much on LDV bandwagon. Not sure I want to buy one after hearing all the negative comments. Thanks for your feedback :)

        • reminds me of the UK car manufacturers in the 60's, 70's & 80's.

Don't mind me, I'm just here for all the "cHiNa CaR bAd" rhetoric… *MJ_munching_popcorn.webm*

The only thing that stopped my buying one as my company car is they had 20 of them on the lot, some old stock/last years MY and still refused to discount, even for old stock (Boss wanted to "give one of those cheap Chinese shitboxes a go").

I live in the middle of NSW mining country and there are shit loads of the LDV twin cabs getting around and I personally know about 5 people who own them.

Biggest complaints I have heard is the infotainment system glitches, some minor surface rust issues, a bit rattly and not really enough power.

Looks like a previous generation BMW and Audi had babies as far as the interior goes.

But i feel they're in the same area as Haval/GWM.

The early editions were absolute sh1tboxes
But with every generation they're getting better.
Agree with Pegaxs, my cousin sells fleet vehicles and the biggest gripe he's had with the chinese made cars are the infotainment systems that crap out and are built terribly.

The actual cars themselves seem to run fine and getting parts from them were a breeze. Not sure how they go after 10 years though, but time will tell.

    • lol yeah. That new HAVAL JOLION is actually quite a good looking car. Stupid name though. I think these cars might be good value after 10 years if they manage to establish themselves (unlike Protons and Neutrons)

  • i think there's someting weird about a 2 ton landcruiser copy that's powered by a turbo petrol 2.0

    that aint right

  • +2

You will no get a lot of constructive feedback here. Most folks hate Chinese cars. Join Facebook groups and see what people complain about and see if you can live with it.

    • +1

problem iis the d90 is unpopular even among ldv models

it'll always be an orphan and the reviews you see on the web are disturbing

  • +3

    Resale value will be shit.

But a used one for a fraction of the new price, and treat it as a disposable.

If you get more than a year out of it, its a bonus.

  • How does that saying go, “you get what you pay for”.
If you want something cheap then go for it. If you want less risk of what buying cheap brings then don’t.

  • I see the hate with Chinese car. Do you think its going to be worse than Holden Craptiva ? Everyone knew the Craptiva was shit but they still sold thousands. You are correct. If I can get a used D90 maybe around $20k or less - it might be worth considering.

    • yeah but Captiva at least had the backing of the Holden dealer network (!) whatever that was worth and at least you had the confidence that Daewoo knew what they were doing (LOL)

i just did a check on carsales

      theres no 2nd hand ones

      this is the cheapest:

      2021 LDV D90 Auto
      $30,000*
      Excl. Govt. Charges

      1,200 km
      SUV
      Automatic
      4cyl 2.0L Turbo Petrol

If you had $20k to gamble i guess its something?

      • Seems to be the only automotive brand in the country right now where you can buy a demo car cheaper than the price of a new one… A tell-tale sign

  • Do it…. looks good. Also look at the MG.

You are talking about a NEW vehicle aren't you?

If not…. what you fail to say here, is what you know you doubt yourself.

    • I wish MG had a 7 seater in Australia. They are doing darn good these days. (Even though LDV is actually a MG).

Yeah I am talking about a new car.

Everything on Carsales for used 2017 + <60k kms + Large SUV's starts at $35k without any warranty. Hate how expensive cars are compared to US.

      • Hate how expensive cars are compared to US.

        Wut?

Highlander (Kluger) starts at US$35,205 drive away which is AU$48,700 as a direct conversion. Ours starts at $52,156 drive away (depending on state). Given many states in the US impose a tax over and above that figure, while ours includes GST (add the fact that our Kluger is build in the US so we're importing it from the US), and you'll see a much smaller divide than you might think…

    Ah how mindsets change huh?

Stay well away from Daewoo, Holden and if you can stay away from Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Proton, Great Wall, Saansyong, Renault and Peugeot. Some of these are very expensive to maintain.

    • Haha that was 8 years ago and LDV was not in the mix. And the first gen of Chinese cars were really bad. Same goes with French cars 10 years ago.

      • +1

Same goes with French cars 10 years ago.

        Ftfy 😉

  • the whole idea of this car makes no sense to me

its 2.2 ton rwd, 2.4 ton 4wd… it runs a 95 octane only turbo 2.0 petrol

its like a turbo 2.0 fwd commodore… oh wait

  • Just don’t take it anywhere near a beach, it’ll rust away, which according to LDV is normal

Shitbox manufacturing and QC. They are cheap for a reason.

Update: So purchased a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Elite - 2.2L Diesel. Will use it for couple of years before thinking of buying anything brand new. Keen to see how good the New Nissan Pathfinder will be without the shitty CVT.

    • how much did you end up paying for it?

  • Private seller. $25k. 98k kms - used by elderly couple - great condition inside out. Drives like a new car. Tried a lot of dealers and most of them either had ex-rental or ex-lease cars which I did not want.
