Can Someone Recommend a Mask for Doing Sport/Exercise?

Hi guys,

Are there any good breathable masks for doing sport/exercising in - whilst remaining effective against COVID?

Many thanks.

EDIT: tough crowd! FYI: we have an indoor mask mandate here in Perth. The only exception is when vigorously exercising. So for light workouts, a mask is still required. Just trying to comply, so appreciate any replies related to the original question.

People should NOT wear masks when exercising, as masks may reduce the ability to breathe comfortably.

Sweat can make the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of microorganisms. The important preventive measure during exercise is to maintain physical distance of at least one meter from others.

To prevent smoke inhalation, which would cause then to pass out, being pretty useless at that whole 'rescuing' thing.

  • How far do you think droplets travel from people? Should get one of those giant hamster balls instead.

Cycling anti-pollution masks - e.g. https://www.coachmag.co.uk/cycling-gear/8328/bike-masks with the right filters

They have valves so it is easy to breathe. The valves mean the air you breathe out is not filtered, so it only protects yourself, not others, but I guess in the 'personal responsibility' phase it is on them if they have chosen not to wear one.

  • If you are breathing heavily enough that your mask is making it feel difficult to breathe, you're exercising enough to not have to wear the mask.

To answer the actual question, I have found a plain disposable surgical mask to be the lightest and most breathable mask so far.

Uniqlo ones are pretty breathable. I train in them pretty often without issue.

Seems to be that getting one that makes it easier to breathe is probably going to make it less effective.

For me, I’d rather be avoiding the situation than trying to find a special mask to suit. Find a place to exercise that doesn’t require a mask at all like the middle of a park.

I think you're better off just doing it all outdoors and forgoing masks completely.

There's little by way of masks that are a) affordable b) high filtration c) breathable. You'll probably have to sacrifice on one of those attributes, so its not going to be fun.

  • Wow with the hate. I live in Perth too and am going through the same thing right now - at my gym you need to wear a mask between sets. Totally frustrating, but I get it.

I've seen a bunch of positive reviews about the Underarmour Sportsmask, but it seems to be sold out everywhere, unless you feel like paying $100 to get it shipped from Amazon US. As far as I can tell most of the other sports-branded masks are just basic masks with the Reebok/Adidas/etc logo splashed on the side, though apparently a couple of them have moisture wicking, and the Lululemon one has some artsy unique design elements that may appeal to people.

An N95/P2 mask with an exit valve is probably the next best bet, as it will make exhalation easier, but obviously this doesn't protect the maskless people around you (no filter on exit valves).

I was doing a google this week and aside from the UA one, couldn't really find anything that said to me "this is the mask for working out"

  • i go raw, just wear no mask.
