Ozito Mower Not Powerful Enough, Would an Ego Be Sufficient?

I currently have this Ozito mower which I got from Bunnings a few months ago: https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-2-x-18v-telescopic-lawn-mo…

I'm finding that for my lawn (probably between 150 - 200 sqm) it doesn't last. Its bag is small and I'm emptying it out quite frequently and most annoyingly it doesn't have much power. Some parts of my lawn aren't very flat, and on those parts, the mower just dies and I'm forced to cut at a higher height and then do the lawn twice.

I was originally thinking of getting a petrol powered mower, but then came across Ego electric mowers and I'm reconsidering an electric powered mower cause it seems just nicer to use from a maintenance and noise perspective.

Does anyone have an Ego that might be able to share their experience with their mower? I'm considering going with something like this model. I don't need the self-propelling feature, I just want one that's powerful with a long run time.

Absolutely. I just replaced my Stihl trimmer and John Deere self propelled with ego 470mm SP and the powerload trimmer. I have a hilly corner block and it's the best purchase of last year for me! Total tools can demo one for you. Ego also do a 30 day no question asked return if you don't like it.

    • Same experience here. I use 3 batteries to do mine as I use the propel up my lawn. Start with the 2.5, switch to 5 and then back to the 2.5 as it's charged again by the time 5 is done.
It cut out a couple of times when I was tackling 4 week growth on a 35deg day due to over heating but give it 30secs and you are back on again.
Make sure you keep the blades sharp. I remove and use belt sander.
It's so light as well so getting up hill and around tricky parts is much easier than my previous Honda.

    Ego….is not a dirty word!

If you did not have an ego you might not care too much who won

You could try mowing more regularly so the Ozito doesn't have to struggle through longer sections. You're only supposed to cut the top third of the grass anyway. So perhaps cutting twice over a few days is better for the lawn and the mower.?

I haven't used an Ego before. It's clearly more powerful, so you'd assume it would be up to the task. For that sort of money it bloody well better be.

    • Not OP, but in the exact situation as OP. We have been trying to mow our lawn daily with our ozito so we can get it to a maintainable height. I can do a 1.5m x 10m strip of the lawn before the batteries give out….and now I have given up.

  • Ego mowers are the way to go.

They don't come cheap compared with Ryobi or Ozito but with one charge of a 5 Ah battery, I can mow my lawns and nature strips and still have charge left.

Their warranty process, if things go wrong, is fast and efficient.

  • Yeah while dearer, ego mowers seem to be the way to go

  • I’ve been using ego lawn mower, blower, and weed trimmer for a year now. Swapped out stihl petrol blower and Honda weed trimmer and Honda mower.

I have about 200m2 or more to mow on sloping corner block.

Stihl petrol blower was better at blowing but was noisy. Ego trimmer is much better than Honda trimmer. Mixed feelings on ego mower. Both mowers aren’t strong enough to cut the buffalo after it grows above 4/6 inches high. Both cut out and get clogged. Personally I’m thinking of buying something more powerful but not sure what I can get. Ego expensive but quality though you need at least 3 batteries and juggle the charging as you mow so buy the ego stuff during a battery promo.

    • I've also had the ego line trimmer & hedge trimmer for ages now…..purchased when Masters went belly up. They've been brilliant.

Out of curiosity which model blower do you have? I delayed replacing my petrol blower with one of the Ego blowers until now as I didn't think they were comparable.

I purchased the LB6504 blower & it certainly feels like it has more power over my petrol blower - https://egopowerplus.com.au/1105m-h-blower/

I'm holding off on getting a ego mower for the time being….I'm not convinced they're a worthy replacement of my petrol mower.

sorry for delay..xmas and holidays etc.

        I bought the following blower,
        1 x EGO POWER+ 56V 900m3/h Blower LB5300E
        1 x EGO POWER+ 56V 2.5AH AMP Hour Battery with Fuel Gauge BA1400T

the blower is fine and I'm happy with it. quiet, light and powerfull.

mower is too weak in opinion and needs more cutting power for my lush buffalo. the honda mower had same issue. not sure if Victa dual battery mower a better option?

    NO

My 20+ year old worn out 2 stroke Victa has more poke. I still use it for the tougher jobs. If i want a HIIT workout i use the EGO.

I've had one for almost 5 years and get about 1hr runtime from the 7.5ah with a mow then whipper snip to finish (If I haven't left it way too long between mows). I don't use the self propelled feature which would obviously cut runtime down.

Would absolutely not go back. Electric is the future - for cars as well as ICE applications. Exception is commercial operators I'd suspect, though you can get a big backpack battery too. Once they can charge from vehicles they'd be laughing.

No fumes is a great benefit for your health and the environment, low noise is great, not to mention next to no service requirements and very cheap to run (even if you did have to replace the battery pack periodically). I've discharged mine ~600 times and it's going strong.
Typically they are rated with reasonable capacity for ~2000 recharges min. Replacement pack is ~$450 so if you hit the wall at 2000 that would be 22c a mow, plus maybe 1kwh of electricity tops (including losses). I would have used about a litre of fuel for a mow previously, better than 1/3 the running cost excl. servicing of a petrol mower - and you get all the other benefits.

If will struggle if you totally bog it down with wet grass or a massive cut - as a petrol mower would - but absolutely no issue if you maintain your lawn.

    No brainer.

    • if it were a no brainer, every commercial mowing service would run them. doesn't happen…

      • +5

People mowing their own backyards don't have to run them for 6 hours a day away from home

  • Purchased the Stihl 510V a couple of months ago for just under $900 (self drive mower and battery) and could not be happier

  • Buy Petrol. Own it for 20 years plus. Buy a set of earmuffs. Move on.

This ^ and keep the blades sharp.

      • +1

Yep, recently considered going electric. The cheap ones are toys and the expensive ones are still too damn expensive for what you get. Just sharpened the blades on the old Honda petrol unit and will wait for the electric market to provide better value.

I recently moved from a 36 volt 5 amp battery Ryobi after 3 years to the 470mm Ego self propelled with the 56 volt 5 amp battery. The Ryobi is lighter and quieter than the Ego and both have no trouble mowing thick buffalo and couch lawns, totalling 150 square metres which is regularly treated, grows fast and needs mowing twice a week in summer. The Ryobi lasts two cuts between charges, the Ego not quite twice due to the self propulsion though you get a spare smaller battery by redemption. The Ego battery charges in about 40 minutes compared to the Ryobi of about 4 hours. The Ryobi blade is a flat blade whereas my Ego has a set in a single blade that cuts at two levels resulting in finer cuttings in the catcher allowing it to hold more with less emptying. You have to allow a few weeks for the mower to teach you and the lawn the right mowing style for best results. I think the Ryobi left a slightly smoother cut in the couch and about the same cut in the buffalo but due to the Ego self propulsion I won’t be going back.

Sydney tools have them same price
$350 cheaper 42cm blade vs 52cm 55L bag vs 70L not self propelled
    Or $750 no Blower

  • I tried an ego self propelled and it was great on my flat areas but once the catcher had any load it was next to useless on hilly areas. Inconsistent cutting height, front end lifting with any bump. Luckily the 30 day trial was in place.
Sadly it went back and I reverted to a Ryobi push mower. Happy now.
If you have a large flat lawn. The ego would be great.

  • I haven't even tried my EGO grass catcher, it's in the shed somewhere.

The included mulching plug works well and the resulting clippings are so fine they can't be seen and quickly rot down to feed the lawn.

  • I have the 46cm Ryobi 36v with 5ah battery. Flat'ish yard, works well and very happy with it, but from what i hear, the Ego is better.
