Way to Buy and Register a Motorbike under Someone Else's Name?

I am looking at getting a motorbike for my mate as a present, however would like it to be a surprise. The idea is to show up at his house with it and just give him the bike and the keys.

The only issue I have is around the registration. I can initially buy it in my name and transfer it over to his name, but that will incur stamp duty for the name transfer. The dealer is also unlikely to let me register it in someone else's name at the shop.

Does anyone have any ideas to get around this? It'll ruin the surprise if I have to take him to the shop to sign for and pick up the bike.

Take him to the shop under the guise that you are buying a motorbike for yourself, ask him what he thinks of it, have him there with you through the whole thing, then when it is time to register it in someone's name, hand him the keys, look him in the eyes… now kiss.

I live interstate so it'll be pretty obvious if go there and I take him to the shop.

…look him in the eyes… now kiss.

And no, I don't swing that way! 😂

Was your idea to have it delivered to him then?

Can the shop deliver it and get him to put it in his name upon delivery?

That might work actually! I'll have to find out if any shops will do delivery! Thanks for the idea!

        • I don't think you even need to register it at all. You can just buy the bike and have it where you want and register it at a later time. Have it delivered and arrive at friend's house same time.

  • If you live interstate, tell him you found a deal on a bike at a shop in his area and will come down for a visit with him while you pick it up. Ask him if it’s ok to store it at his place until you orgainise transport…

If you are interstate, say to your friend that you want to get it registered before you ride it home but they won’t let you because you have an out of state address and if he could come with you to the shop and register in his name…

    • ..before you ride it home

Haha It's not a bike anyone would ride interstate. He also knows I wouldn't be getting myself a bike anytime soon (due to health reasons, not by choice). We've all got cars and everything already, so he'll be using the two wheeler for commuting purposes for the odd trip into the CBD office and was looking at a scooter. Naturally, we're all giving him sh.t and mates do not let their mates ride vespa-like scooters - so I'm going to get him something a little less girly - that little honda monkeyish bike (I'm avoiding the actual name of it here). 🤣

Have you actually lined it up with the dealership already? if it's one of the trio 125cc Honda bikes, rhymes with Dom, Donkey and Muntter Pub(also using fake names for your benefit :P)

Then I've read recently that they have become illegal due to stricter ADR rules where they must have duel ABS, which these don't. Last chance to get them was in Nov last year.

Unless you're looking at a used one, then ignore what I just wrote.

          Thanks! That's the one! haha

What the,,, - I didn't even know this. I was looking at doing something in the next few weeks when I can actually make it interstate to a dealer. I saw a few on bikesales that are brand new so didn't think too much about it.

Worst case, I may have to go second hand - they're not that much cheaper than brand new. It'd be easier I guess - I can pay the seller, take the bike and still have 14 days or whatever it is to transfer it into my mate's name.

Have you spoken to the(a) dealer already?

I would have thought they have come across these types of things - spouse buying for spouse, dad buying for kids etc
