Recommendations on Multi Split System Air-Conditioning Units

Hey guys,

Happy new year!

I wanted to ask for recommendations on multi split system air-conditioning units as I'm planning to have one installed in all the upper level bedrooms (4)

The one I've found so far is from The Good Guys. It's the 4 bedroom house option for $3555 not including installation which is $600 on top of the bulk price
https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/fujitsu-multi-system-air-cond…

They're Fujitsu 2.5kw systems. For anyone who may own a Fuji system or has knowledge, are they any good? We currently have two cheap units in the two living rooms upstairs and they cool the room down a little, but it's also very loud. Both Conia units

I believe the 3kw and above features smart home technology which would be handy as a few of our rooms are smart enabled. But then I could also get like the wifi adapter or tablet that Fujitsu has.

Thanks everyone

You won't get a 4 headed multi split installed for $600… More like $600-800 per head.

    • Apologies, I meant 600 per unit installed

  • Just go ducted, may even be able to control downstairs if you find some good spots to run droppers

    • I'll look into the options. Thanks. If it comes up that per head installation plus base cost for unit, then it may be wise

  • You would be lucky to get a 2.5Kw system cool just one bedroom, let alone 4

    • For a 15sqm room what do you recommend? I'll have someone come take a look

Note that high kw system are almost never 5 star energy rated - this is your compressor.

4x Mitsubishi Avanti 2.5kW at Bunnings $3120 plus installation which would be about $600 per unit. It would be the wiser choice. At least if one compressor gone it is 1/4 not all goes down.

    • I have to agree with the multiple compressors. Not everyone likes the same temperatures. Not all rooms will need to be cooled. Also, it allows for the investment to be spread over time if needed.
Sure, there are more compressors but 4 not having to work as hard is better than one uber compressor having to manage 4 heads and all the beating that will come with it.

        That's not how these work.

I have a 4 head Panasonic unit - outdoor unit is 6.8Kw, heads are 2.5 in bedrooms, 5 in lounge. You can set the temperatures individually and any number can be run at the same time. If you run them all at the same time, it will spread the load over the outdoor capability, but we've never had them all on at the same time anyway. There was a larger outdoor unit available, but we got the smaller one and it's been completely fine (have tons of insulation as well).

Had it 5 years now, it's been awesome - obviously if the compressor dies, you lose the whole lot, but that's no different to ducted.

    • You've also got 4x the amount of equipment that can breakdown though.

      • One compressor breaks you need to pack your bags for the shopping centre. 1 of 4 breaks you still got 3 rooms to occupy. What is the risk of 4 going down at once?

        • You're absolutely right, but my point isn't about them all going down at once, it's about the ongoing cost of maintaining all 4 vs 1. I can understand why someone would go either way with their decision.

          • @Jebus:

ongoing cost of maintaining all 4 vs 1

Hardly any maintenance. Give the outdoor unit a wipe and vacuum dust around the fins at the back and check the fans. Unless you use it under extreme conditions or you buy really crap units. Mitsubishi 2.5kws units are around $800 each. I managed to get Hisense units for $550 with 5 year warranty. It is an enclosed system. It isn't like evaporative coolers that need a service every year. Probably the cheapest option you could get.

I am not sure people's opinions I have both my air cons located on the east side because hottest is west side in the afternoons. Not having the outdoor units fight the hot sun would probably help prolong life a little.

Never thought about that, good point.

  • Have Fujitsu, no issue after 10 years. Never bothered with the split system though - simply wasn't feasible.
I feel like this price might be too high - speak to an AC wholesaler.

    • It's an AC wholesaler different from those who specialise in AC such as Coldflow?

      Thanks

      • Not sure about Cold flow - wholesalers are just that, they aren't retailers, they buy in bulk and it's all they do.
I'm just not sure why you'd pay $875 per head with one outdoor unit when essentially, for the same price, you could get 4 separate units.

I got you. Just looked it up and it's literally warehouse wholesale.

I'll look into MHI and Fuji as they seems to be the pick.

    • if yours is not split system, what type of Fujitsu did you install ? ducted ?

  • You might be able to replace the 2 units you already have with something decent. Installation costs may be cheaper if they can reuse the power feed and refrigerant lines.

  • Yeah maybe we can do that. Would still like our bedrooms cooled since it'll be so hot

If we get 4 units + installation of each it'll probably be around the 7k mark, so with that I'm considering ducted refrigerated aircon on this case

    • hey mate not sure this will help. But i have a 4 bedroom house 29sq and i am looking at getting cooling added atm.

I have got a couple of quotes and the prices have varied between 11.5k and 14.5k. i did consider split systems but over price and aesthetics are pushing me towrds the slightly more expensive option of ducted refrigerated cooling with no bulky units hanging from the walls.

      hope this helps.

      • Appreciate the response. It looks like you ended up exactly where I am, thank you for the figures estimates though, really does give me an insight. Just for the units +install of each unit well equal to about 7k at minimum so like you, I'm learning towards refrigerated ducted aircon too

Thanks again, let me know how everything goes moving forward
