[Switch] GTA Trilogy Remastered $63.96 (20% off) @ Nintendo eShop

90

Looks like the first price drop for this title, not sure I'm keen enough to purchase but some might find this price easier to digest.

Three iconic cities, three epic stories. Play the genre-defining classics of the original Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas updated for a new generation, now with "across-the-board enhancements" including brilliant new lighting and environmental upgrades, high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting, and much more, bringing these beloved worlds to life with "all new levels of detail".

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition includes:

  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.

  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.

  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas…a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of cops frame him for homicide, forcing CJ on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets in the next iteration of the series that changed everything.

    Reviews suggest to avoid. YMMV

Well, apparently it's a little bit shite

I'd steer clear at this price.

the switch version is by far the worst out of a very shitty lot

  • +2

    Don’t. Still extremely broken.

I enjoyed San Andreas on the Switch despite its issues.

It's only worth it if you plan on playing the game in handheld only/on the go, every other version beats Switch docked.

So many better ways to drop $60 on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Don't buy these awful ports, go and buy ~5-10 brilliant indie games for the same price.

    Avoid like the plague.

Like Qualbert suggested above, use that $60 on several games: use Deku Deals to hunt for what’s on sale now.

I rather just play this games on my PS2 hooked up to my CRT TV for a genuine nostalgic experience.

Not buying this versions quick rushed cash grabs.

totally agree. playing SA on xbox gamepass at the moment. so many bugs and glitches. only redeeming feature is the auto save checkpoints but even then they are not consistently implemented, some missions requiring to drive for 5-110 minutes if failed. play on PS2 or OG Xbox if you are nostalgic about them. hard pass for any payment to Rockstar.

I’ve seen this on the worst games of 2021 list

  • $10 or no deal

  • pls sirs… redeem this game…

I know what everyone's gonna say, and they're right.

But I bought it on Xbox from day one and it was a bit of a mess there, still happily 1000GS'd GTA 3 but haven't bothered getting around to much of VC or any of SA tbh.

And then I bought it on Switch for the (profanity) of it because I'm part of the problem. And let me tell you. If you thought everything you've heard about this release was a shitshow, times it by a solid at least 1.75 and you've got the Switch version. At times it looks okay and at other times it looks muddier than the next morning's shit after the winery. The visuals aside though, bc you expect as much with Switch. There was a bunch of glitches I saw in my 20 odd minutes the other night that weren't even in the Xbox version for me, in addition to all the old ones like the lockup sound repeating over and over STILL any time you go in a garage or Pay n Spray and shit. The load times are absolute arse, like damn, it's been a while since I played the PS2 originals (and even longer on OG hardware at that) but I honestly think they would have been a bit quicker, I know the 15 seconds or so it took for CJ to leave his house last night was never that bad though, insane.

As I said after half an hour of playing it a week or so back when I bought the Switch version, regardless of the difference in engines and upgrades and whatnot, the end result, is

Grand Theft Auto 3 runs better on my iPod Touch from 2011 than on this "current gen" piece of hardware.

If you have the means, I'd recommend checking out the terrific re3 and reVC ports of the games. I've only played it on Wii U bc I'm not really, I'm an idiot at modding stuff and the Wii U is the newest piece of hardware I have with mods on it. It looks great, upscales and shit, brings over the free aim of PC, checkpoint saves, custom radios and so on, basically a lot of the stuff they were hyping in the new version (higher res textures, checkpoints, updated controls, etc.) is already there. And it's available on PS Vita, Wii U, PC, it's on a LOT of shit, hell, they got it running on the goddamn (New)3DS which is just great. Bummer it won't work on my old 2DS but what can you do. Anyway,

At the end of the day, you get 320 gold coins back, so it's juuuuust over 60 bucks for the trilogy, and even with everything I just said and everything everyone else has and will say, at 20 bucks a pop, you really can't go wrong with these absolute classics. This is faaaaar from the definitive version, faaaar from the best way to play, honestly I'd actually say get the (significantly cheaper) Android versions (if they're still up on sale) and throw them on your tele and you'll have a better time, but liek, again, 20 odd bucks, all 3 are still a treat to play through. Just know what you're getting into.

  • Was on the fence but damn you’ve made me fall off it. If an amazing patch comes along then it’d be a maybe.

  • Wow, I’m surprised by all the bad reviews. I used to play these games on the original Xbox almost 20 years ago. I haven’t played any of the GTA series since, and not a huge gamer. I’m not saying there’s no issues as described, but perhaps I either don’t notice, or accept it for what it is.

But I love playing these on the Switch. I haven’t noticed any issues. Load times between scenes may be longer than expected sometimes, but the graphics still look the same. It’s just fun retro gaming. Good times reliving that part of my life.

I’ve only played it docked with the pro controller.
