[VIC] Panettone $6 @ Coles (Flemington)

130

Getting rid of them after Christmas. Ital brand, made in Australia, as good (IMHO) as many of the fancier imported ones. Still had a lot in stock last night, but the Footscray store had nothing.

Also good for making french toast (cut it so it make circles that fit perfectly in the pan) or a trifle.

    Who buys these pre-Xmas?

      Who buys these at all?!

Yeah it never really lives up to the hype but it does make pretty nice French toast. But even at $6 each it's not a bargain for me, I'm kinda scared to think what they were charging pre-christmas.

$12; occasionally dropping to $10. If you want to be scared, go to an Italian deli/supermarket, and see how much you can pay for on there.

It's Australia, so expect the lowest quality with the highest price as usual…

      • Surprisingly not; much cheaper than the imported ones, and my whole family preferred this one over an imported one we got that was $30

        • My comment wasn't specific, it seems that you interpreted it how you wanted to.
IMO Lowest quality and highest price applies to the imported ones as well, as the majority of the imported products you can find here are so bad they're not even sold in their country of origin, especailly not in Italy. Just because you paid $30 for an imported one, doesn't necessarily mean it's good.

          • @RiseAndRuin: I don't think I understand. Are you saying everything in Australia is bad quality and expensive? Or that cheap ones are better quality?

  • I paid $30 for gluten free.
    My friend loves these.
I must try as french toast

  • We bought a high end Italian made Panettone from Coles for $20, gorgeous wrapping and a big satin bow, however it was too much like grandma's ponderous Christmas cake (grandma wasn't Italian!!) We did like the $8 one (also Italian) that our local Coles sold out of weeks ago, much lighter weight and what we consider the way Panettone should be .. 😍 .. !!

  • is it a cake..?

Somewhere between bread and cake; yeasted dough, very airy, sweet, but less sweet than cake.
