I've been looking for one of these to have in the back of the car for a while. Not one of these however.
If you read up online you find these cheap units are just a plastic case around a battery. A nasty one.
They dont retain charge well, so you have to charge them every fortnight, and the capacity is wayyy over rated
A small unit like this would only suit a go cart, or maybe a really really small car if its just under.
Even if it could deliver the power, the leads are often so thin they catch fire! haha

What I would like to see is something that can jump start a car from a power point, but that is probably not to be portable in the slightest.

As for this product, definitely something you want to check out in person first

    • Super Cheap used to sell a 240V jump starter. Can't see it on their site now.

    • Hi outlander,

I'm well aware of the limitations of sealed lead acid batteries, but I'm happy with that given the price.

However, I haven't had much luck find info on what recommended or minimum specs are for jump starting a car. I've only got a little four cylinder Corolla, so I'm hoping this means I can get away with something lower end. Could you point me towards the resources you were looking at?

      Thanks

BTW, I bought this from a DSE that is closing down, so I actually ended up paying 30% less.

    Sale ends 9/4 - tomorrow.
8AH capacity battery!!!! 100W max. Good luck starting anything with that.
And its a lead acid battery - so must be kept upright!
If you used the 11A max output, the battery (charge or life of battery) would not last long.
But why this is called a "300Amp Jumpstart system"??? 292AH car battery + 8AH Jumpstart?
As self-contained air compressor, with a 12V outlet (charge phone, tablet, etc) is possibly OK.
Only good point is free delivery - my car battery is flat!

    • Sorry Bruce, but even this female knows better. Its a sealed lead acid battery - they use a gell rather than liquid so they dont need to be stored upright. Probably helps but its not essential.

I think you are confusing this with a standard lead acid battery.

These can work with a car, just cant be used to crank over a starter for more than a few times. My son useds a similar unit to this for an old VN commodore to start it.

      • Good point! But I didn't know that knowledge is gender specific! I was going by a post on Whirlpool forums warning of the issue in a similar one. But obviously I am wrong, as how could they ship it to you! There are larger capacity units than this. As I said - good luck starting a car with a 8AH battery.

    • It is called a "300Amp Jumpstart System" because it can, presumably, supply up to 300 Amps from its battery. This is quite believable, but it doesn't really tell you anything about how good or bad this device is.

The whole idea of using "jump leads" is not to provide enough energy to power the car's starter motor. The idea is to recharge the car's own battery, and then use the car's own battery to start the car.

Assuming 75% efficiency (a guess) using this device to charge the car's battery, about 6AH should be transferred to the car's battery. A car battery is roughly 50AH, so you are adding about 10% of the energy of a "full" car battery - probably enough for one or two starts.

If your car battery is flat simply because you left the headlights turned on, then one or two starts should be sufficient to get the engine started. If your car battery is flat because you couldn't get the engine to start and flattened the battery that way, then you have an engine problem, and this device probably won't help you.

      • Not quite. What will happen is the small battery will charge the larger car battery for awhile, until the voltage is equal in both cells. You can't transfer anywhere close to 75% of the energy transfer without using voltage modifying circuitry. It might help if your just a little short, but if the battery is heavily discharged its jsut too weak.
Best method would be to connect it for a short amount of time, a few minutes maybe to allow it to transfer a portion of energy, and then use the combined power of both batteries to try and start the car.

    • Ah and amps are different. I've used these to jump start several 4 and 6 cylinder cars.

    It's a good price,but just no use.

Kmart sells this normally for $44.. I think it also works as an inverter to charge laptop - Not sure, but it certainly has USB ports to charge your phones. The only thing that it doesn't have is the air compressor.

  • interesting small little unit

does the air compressor powerful enough to blow dust on my computer motherboard/PC case? :P

  • So does this actually work and will I need to recharge it every 2 weeks? I.e. will it hold charge for months?

    • SLA batteries don't hold their charge forever, I'd recommend charging at least every six months. State-of-charge can be easily measured using the battery voltage: 12.8V is fully charged, about 12.0V is half charged.

Also, SLA batteries don't last forever. Most computer backup supplies have an internal SLA battery, and a proper backup supply will have a "use by" date sticker on it. This is the date when the SLA battery should be replaced. I can't tell you how long the battery in this device will last - perhaps it will also have a sticker?
