Monitor for my 16 year old around $350?

Hello all,

My 16-year-old son wants a monitor for his MacBook Air as a late Christmas present. I’m trying to work out what’s a reasonable buy. Between his present money and chipping in from his savings his budget will be $350 to $400 at a stretch. Size around 27 inch.

Intended use is the usual general purpose schoolwork, surfing, movies but I think he eventually envisages connecting a console Xbox Series X down the track (though he doesn’t have his own). He’s throwing around terms like 1440p and high refresh rate. I’m not up on the topic but after a bit of a research I’m not sure both are compatible with the budget and he’s realising that something's got to give. I’m wondering if 1440p make any sense on such a screen.

I'd love informed advice and suggestions. There is so much out there to consider that they become a blur. Some I’ve looked at:

This one doesn’t exactly meet his initial ideas but suspect it’s a decent compromise:

Stretches the budgethttps://www.amazon.com.au/Dell-27-Curved-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B08FRJBSHQ?tag=ziffdavisau09-22&ascsubtag=05PUIs7Z7U0HHjidB5BcGCK

Too expensive unless possibly on sale:

Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you should be able to find a 144 Hz 1440p 27" monitor in that price range. I had a quick look and found the following options:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334091601614 $299 using code PSLDELL

Premium option: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334147913393 $429 using that same code.

My suggestion would be to try and stretch the budget to $429 and get the S2721DGF - great monitor and high refresh rate with FreeSync (for gaming/Xbox Series X). I use mine as my main monitor for WFH and XSX gaming.

You guys and girls rock! Knew I came to the right place. S2721DGF looked sensational for the money. This really helped cut through the fog of excessive choice.

Gone ahead and ordered it just now Woo hoo. Thanks to you all. Can't believe the speed of your reactions. Like superheroes waiting for the lonely distress call in the night.😀 You never sleep.

Thanks again for taking the time you legends🥲.

I did my best to answer the question the OP posted.

It claims in the description to be educational and great for your home desk…

  • I suggest looking for USB-C power delivery which allows one cable connection and simultaneous charging of the MacBook Air.

The Dell S2722DC looks like a good deal at the moment.

    • That would depend how old his Air is.

      • Absolutely, but for future-proofing would still go usb-c with PD.
