How to Achieve This Garden Edging

I don't like doing the edging and keep putting it off until it's out of control and by then the grass has overgrown and started going into my gardens. I would like my lawn edging to be semi permanent so I only need to attend it once in a while.

While I was walking past a business complex I noticed they have dug up the edges as in the photo. I am wondering what's the easiest way to do this. I prefer to use a power tool if possible.

There is no pic. But a powerful whipper snipper will quickly dig a little trench as you edge

    • Just updated the post with the links.
It's much deeper than what a whipper snipper or edger can dig up. It was roughly 50-100mm not sure if the photos show it correctly.

I do 50mm deep easy with a cheap whipper snipper.

      • That's looks achievable with whipper snipper. Mine are probably about 3xm width and 5cm depth, done with whipper snipper.

I've also got a powered edger but I find it awkward, and doesn't do anything I can't do with the whipper snipper.

    Man
Urban dictionary really has ruined even the most innocent of words.

Fortunately was the G rated one.

    • LOL, my mind went to the wrong edging too.

I didn't know where exactly you were going with this.

Those are some nice edges you have linked. Unfortunately I am inexperienced in that area of gardening.
Good luck and I hope you can one day flex your landscaping skills to your entire street.

OP: What you're after are aptly called an "edger". I didn't know this was a common thing, but bunnings carries them! https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/garden/garden-tools/edg…

    • I own one but couldn't get this result with it. It could be my (lack of) skills.

  • It's an edger. Although that's quite a thick edge

  • My old man used to get an edge like that. He had a petrol edger. (see bunnings link by chrisn26) However the "blade" was a multicore steel cable about as thick as your pinky tip.
Makes a hell of a mess the first time you use it but fine after that.

    • Do you know where can I get this type of blade?

      • Sorry. This was well over 20 years ago.
I do know that he only shopped at dedicated lawn mower / garden machinery stores. You probably won't have any luck at Bunnings etc.
I believe when he bought the edger it came with this and a regular blade included. It wasn't an addon.

Alternatively, use a spade to cut the edge you want. Remove the unwanted soil and grass. Maintain the edge with a line trimmer.

    • Tried it but couldn't even do a foot. The grass roots are super dense and tight.

  • There is no permanent solution. You’ll still need to trim it regularly. I have some edging that looks a little like that and still need to trim it every time I mow. It’s easier to keep that way than to let it get out of control and have to try and get it back.

Do the hard work and cut it back with a spade or buy/borrow a powered edged with a steel blade (not cord). Once you’ve done that it’ll be easier to keep net with a line trimmer, but won’t be permanent.

My edging has been achieved by line trimming regularly and the look has improved over the time I’ve been maintaining these edges. It helps when the lawn is higher than the path.

Depends on the type of lawn you have.

If you have lawn that sends out runners. That type of edge won't work for the purpose you want.

And of you did by some Miracle achieve that look,

It would be still alot of work to maintain that look.
    - When it over grows in some places and not others
    - not straight,
    - keeping a neat and tidy edge.

Maybe show us what you have, that might help.
Keeping it simple is your best bet. Over thinking it will create more work for you which you wanted to avoid in the first place.

  • I have a 4 stroke Atom Lawn edger that cuts a 'trench' the thickness of the blade but AFAIK they don't have blades that'll cut that wide.

Maybe wander past the complex on a regular basis and you might catch the Gardener who does it? Or even ask someone at the complex who their Gardener is, if that's possible.

  • I'd say you could achieve that using a sharp edged spade. I don't like it myself as quite easy to twist an ankle on it.
