1997 ln107 HiLux 4WD problems

This might be a bit of a silly question but is there supposed to be a 4wd indicator light come on when I press the 4wd button on the transfer shifter? I have it in high but when I press the 4wd button nothing seems to happen. I've also tried engaging it while slowly driving around in 1st with no luck

  • Best to ask on the Australian Toyota 4WD forum I guess reaches a targeted audience

  • By "button" do you mean lever? Can you feel it move! Can you shift into low?

  • Definitely a hilux/Toyota forum question. While there might be a few hilux owners here, they seem to be mich more likely to own a cheap hatchback, euro poser mobile or something less than 5yo.

  • Thanks guys, I'll give it a go in there. I'm tempted to just put it up on jacks and rest it but I wanted to make sure I'm on to something first

  • Yes a light will come on, but only if the switch on the transfer case is working, and only if it's actually going into 4wd. Do you get a clunk when pressing the switch? Does it wind up the drivetrain if you've pressed it, and then try to do a turn on bitumen? Can also put it on grass or sand and see if it spins just the rear tyres, or a front one as well.

You could have a problematic switch in the lever, transfer case motor issue, or feedback switch issue. From memory I think they have a vacuum operated thing in the front diff as well?
