IKEA Gift Card Purchased from Woolworths Not Working

Bought a $200 IKEA Gift card from Woolies.

It's been almost 4 days now, not working on Ikea website. Had a chat to Ikea they said its not showing up on their system and I should talk to Woolies. Went back to Woolies they said manager not there come back later.

Any suggestions with regards to the above.

Do you still have the receipts where you bought the gift card? The long one as well as the stub one where it says card activated? That will help greatly when you talk to the manager.

It happens to me as well. You need to wait at least 24 hrs. If you want to try if it has been activated on IKEA end, try to check balance on IKEA website.

    • Also if you check T&C on IKEA website. You will see it says 24 hrs iirc

From the information you’ve provided thus far, it sounds like you may fallen victim to a glitch that rarely happens for third-party gift cards sold at Coles or Woolworths.

What you need to keep in mind is that when a store sells third-party gift cards (i.e. gift cards not directly issued by them), there are merely acting as an agent and/or a promoter of the gift card, so they only pass the funds to another party who handles the activation of the gift card. If you’re at Woolworths and you purchase a $100 IKEA gift card, Woolworths takes the $100 from your payment method (e.g. cash, debit card, credit card, prepaid EFTPOS/Visa/MC gift card) and passes it off to a third-party to handle the activation of the gift card. I know that InComm is an example of a third party who receives funds from the sale of some gift cards sold at Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Target, BIG W, etc and activates the gift cards, but I don’t think they managed IKEA gift cards.

In my view, Woolworths ultimately has responsibility of the gift card sale and are the ones you need to chase up, as they took the money from you and in return sold you a gift card (even if it was only on behalf of another party). This situation may be something the store manager will be unable to resolve, as they would have no way of knowing where your money has gone, so you will likely need to chase this up with Woolworths’ head office. I suggest you try your luck with the store manager first, but don’t get cranky with them if they seem unwilling or unable to help, as their hands are usually tied when it comes to gift card sales.

If Woolworths’ head office is being unhelpful, I suggest you contact your state or territory’s Fair Trading office (which looks like VCAT in your case), as you have paid for goods that you have not received. If you’re going to go down this route, make sure you document everything (e.g. scanned copies of the purchase and activation receipts, online chats with IKEA staff, names of staff you have spoken to at the Woolworths store that sold you the gift card and Woolworths’ head office).

One (dumb) question: is there any evidence that the IKEA gift card may have been tampered? When I posted an EFTPOS gift card deal a few months ago, someone reported after a couple of days that the EFTPOS gift cards at their local store had barcodes for other EFTPOS gift cards stuck onto the back of the card, which meant that anyone who purchased a tampered gift card actually purchased a gift card that was different to the one they thought they were purchasing.

Thanks for the reply. I will document everything and if nothing works out then I shall take it up to the fair trading office or consumer affairs victoria.

just a hassle and waste of time to get this stuff sorted out

  • Visited Woolies earlier today. Same story manager is not there come back in 2 days. I gave them all my details and asked them to get back to me.
Just chatting with Ikea Helpdesk again and its just weird that the card number doesn't show up in their system.

  • Went to IKEA store later today, Had a chat with their customer rep it magically showed up balance on their system today but could only use it in store. Finally used it.

(had been to woolworths in the morning and the Manager there was so damn rude she was literally yelling out of her lungs that they don't care if the receipt shows its activated they dont care if it works or does not work. I am a very calm and chilled out person, I did tell her to keep cool.)

    • I also have an IKEA gc purchased from Preeze is not working, the pin is only 3 digit numbers where it supposed to be 4 digit numbers… So I have to go back to the store to get it activated? What a mess
