  • Plastic fantastic build quality but good spec for the price

  • so are you saying plastic is flimsy and wont last?

    • +2

It's HP's standard cheapest plastic laptop chassis. Feels cheap and probably will break easily from experience.

      • +2

        read some reviews

        its plastic everywhere

even my shithouse acer aspire and swift uses an alloy lid

be that as it may, here's a clanger:

"On the left side of the machine, you can find the power plug, as well as two USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 1) ports. Then, on the right, there is an HDMI 1.4b port, a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 1) port, an audio jack, and an SD card reader."

it will not charge off usb c

only the std. hp large barrel

        so nah on that

        • +1

Getting tired of manufacturers dumping these old HDMI 1.4 ports on us. HDMI 2.0 is 8 years old now, most people have 4K monitors they want to drive these days.

Yes of course you can hook up a dock to the USB C port to drive multiple 4K displays, but why buy yet another piece of hardware that hangs off the machine when you could just use the port that came with it?

Rant over for now, I’ll be back later…

ips panel doesnt mean much when its a 250nit 45% ntsc screen. Not bad given the price but dont go off thinking the panel will be any good

    • +2

      ooof

my aspire has an ips 45% screen and its horrible

absolutely the worst ips i've ever seen

do not buy this… for me 72% is the lowest i could honestly accept day to day

goes without saying reject TN and VA types as well

    • 45% ntsc panel is very common at this price. better displays usually start above $1200.

      • I did say 'Not bad given the price'

My comment was meant to be a heads up to people thinking it got a great screen because op mentioned its IPS panel-except panel type doesnt have much to do with the actual quality of things.

The 5700U (while still great) is based on the older Zen 2 (3xxx series) architecture instead of the Zen 3. You want the 5800U for Zen 3, just to clear up AMD's misleading information.

    • Whist the 5700u is based on Zen2, which was no slouch, it is a more refined architecture compared to the 4000 series CPU.

  • As a desktop replacement is this the ticket? Build quality won't matter to me, always connected to external monitor and keyboard.

    • +2

The CPU in this laptop would be overkill for most people needs. If you need an 8 core CPU, then this would be fine as a desktop replacement.

Second the shellshocked's comment. It may not have the build quality/battery life/lightweight for daily carry everywhere or the versatility of full featured type-c but for some one who primarily wants to just use it as a desktop either on it's own or connected to monitor/KB/mouse this is not a bad option.

But if you don't need this much Multitasking oriented CPU then Lenovo Carbon 7i slim (intel) is much more balanced offering with enough build quality/battery life/type-c ports etc which can also me used as desktop replacement and at below 1 kg that may be the easiest to carry everywhere at the same price range if you can find one.

Earlier deal references for Slim 7i carbon:

      • I think the powerful CPU will really help out. Currently I'm using this config;

        Lenovo ThinkPad E470
        i7-7500U, 16GB, GeForce 940MX

I can have 40+ tabs open while transcoding video at times.

        • Yes. CPU wise this is certainly a real upgrade compared to i7-7500u. 2-core/4-thread vs 8-core/16-threads with much better performance per core.

  • Can anyone point me to a review of this model laptop? Have searched but nothing..

People are struggling to get laptops nowadays and companies are struggling to piece together some configurations based on whatever they get and quickly churn out whatever feasible. No time for pre-launch, prototype units etc. And these won't be available after their limited manufacturing runs. So if it meets your needs and if you certainly need a laptop then get it. Otherwise just miss it so that someone who really needs it can get it.

That's nature of current time and market :). Interesting times indeed!!!
