What to Do with a TV with a Faulty Mainboard?

Hi everyone,

My TV unfortunately is written off (the seller agrees to replace it but let me keep the old one). I think the TV is perfectly fine except the mainboard I think (restart every couple of minutes). The mainboard model is ms68860-ZC01-01 , t con board is cv580u1-t01. I search all over the internet but none sells the mainboard with the same part number. Throwing the whole TV is a waste.

I think so my questions are:

  1. Can I buy the same mainboard model but with different part number? Does it work?
  2. Another solution is to buy a generic/universal LCD controller e.g to take HDMI input and control the LED panel, so I can use a TV box instead. Does anyone try that? Where do I start Is there a website/forum for these kind of questions? The controller is rather on the expensive side so wanna ask first before buying.

Thank you :)

Sounds like bad solder joints. This is probably bad advice, but you could try removing all the plastic bits and "reflow" the board in your oven for a few minutes. It might fix the TV temporarily, but the TV will die again eventually. Do this at your own risk! Your SO may not be happy with you for quite some time as the oven will have a funny smell after that.

    • Yeah I even repeated this half a dozens times on my old TV. Would get it working for another 3-4 months each time.

    • Good point ! Always want to do some soldering myself (bough all the tools on ozbargain lol )

I don't recommend you solder all the joints on the board by hand. The pads on modern circuit boards are quite small and can come off the board easily if you are not sure what you are doing. If you want to make sure the reflow lasts a little longer, maybe spray the board with some flux before you put it through the oven. Maybe also keep all your windows open while you are doing it as well, apparently the fumes are not good for you. Good luck.

    • I did this for my dad's plasma TV he can't bear to part with. Oven at a reasonable temp, bit of foil over the plastic parts, and cook until golden brown (not really). Been working a treat for 6 months+ now

    • Yeah reflowing can contaminate the oven w/ by products after using it for a reflow. You have to clean it after…

Advising someone to fix any TV is bad advice considering they are so very cheap to buy second hand on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.

Throw it away if you don't have electrical repair experience. Before you electrocute yourself.

    • I'm aware of the capacitor holding charge after disconnecting from power source, what else should I know ?

Some bits are sharp. Have some band aids handy.

      • That you will eventually get tempted to play around with it while plugged in because you will get frustrated after the time and money you've invested that it's not working. You will spot what you think is a bad join/connection or something like that, and convince yourself it's ok to poke around with an insulated screwdriver. You will keep going til you zap yourself. At that point you will be ready to admit defeat and throw it away.

    • Also the cost and risks of repair far outweighs the cost to buy a newer, better second hand model

Landfill/Recyvle - TV's are so cheap now it is not worth the effort or cost of trying to repair.

last time I tried the local recycle/landfill here $55 for TV's…. same for old mattress'…

      • Our local Council take all electronic waste at no cost

The only thing I haven't attempted to fix so far is 15$ Kmart fan , lol

Whack it on marketplace/gumtree, someone will have a use for a screen.

I have seen tv's of a similar/same model where the screen's been smashed, sometimes you can wait on gumtree/marketplace for one of these to come up for free and take the motherboard out of it and transplant it, bam 2 tv's for the price of 1.

    • That's a good idea, my TV is an unpopular brand (Aldi) so might have to wait for quite some time….

      • You never know
The bauhn/thorn/ insert generic name seem to come up a fair bit, moreover than the more reliable lg samsungs and sonys

        • …mmmhh wonder if that is causative or associative with being 'reliable'?

  • curbside it

  • Yeet

  • YOLO

  • It's your own Christmas present, get a new TV :)

  • Unplug the power, let all the capacitors drain for a few days (a week to be safe, two to be extra extra safe) then go for it! Good luck sir!

found results for the mainboard and the tcon. Mainboard is about $75 from USA : https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/144161795715?chn=ps&_ul=AU&mkevt… have seen good 4k tvs going for $200 - $350 when people move. I would try PC input or changing display modes, to see if those help. If you search for the model, you may also get a result for the exact issue you have.

    • Thanks, did the same search but the part number is different. I guess it means the firmware to control the panel will be different too. If it's just 20$ I would try without a second thought but it's 100$ , postage from USA is really expensive.

  • Part of planned obsolescence , manufacturers wont admit it, but these basic faults are there on purpose.

  • Try Taobao.

I once replace board of my old Bravia. Just get the board model and buy off eBay etc. and then straight forward swap.

    Whirlpool.com.au might help

Usually the first thing that blows is near the entry as they are first to take the impact of the power surge you probably had that blew the board.
The primary side that supply's the power to the CPU faulty making it shut down at a guess

  • Take the part out and send it to someone like Module Repair Serivce(VIC Based) to see if they can repair the part. https://www.modulerepair.com.au/

UPDATED : Thanks all for your responses . I ordered an used power board from USA (for JVC TV), slightly different model with different connector housing to LED+/- (only notice when I receive it), for 20 bucks (+ 30 for postage) , plug it into the TV today and it seems fine now :)
