Alternative to Kingston KC2500 M.2 SSD?

My mum has a Dell Latitude 7480 laptop. Very good laptop but it only has a 128GB M.2 SSD.

I replaced it with a Kingston KC2500 500GB drive. Very fast but then it started having issues with detection and has eventually failed after only a month. Amazon will ship a replacement, but reading the reviews this looks to have happened to a lot of other people. And given my mum is like 500kms away it's not a simple thing to keep changing drives.

The Kingston seemed to really fit the bill - very fast (although of course there are faster drives) and an excellent price (I think it was $83 at the time, now $79).

Suggestions on a similar drive that I can replace the Kingston with? She'd be okay with $100, prob even $120.

Thinking either WD Black SN750 or Samsung 970 Evo Plus. Both sub $100.

    Thoughts?

I’d go the Black, have had a few and never experienced any issues.

Both of those are top end drives. Can't go wrong with either
KC2500 is a pretty budget SSD, though if it's failing after a month then that has to be worse than the bottom of the barrel Crucial P1 and P2

The KC2500 is a well regarded SSD - OCAU's SSD thread recommends this one strongly. So may I suggest that perhaps you just got a lemon, it happens with even the best pieces of hardware.

By the same token there's a very, very small chance the controller has issues with some part of the laptops hardware or config - but thats very unlikely. There's not much logic to just discarding what was an excellent choice due to a single failure - thats an incredibly small sample size, so try to look at logically and objectively.

I'm personally buying a KC2500 soon - as it's regarded as best in the pricerange but if you want to step up that range I am sure that'll give you other options just as good…albeit at a tad more $$$.

Had a chat with my mum about what everyone's said (thanks everyone) and decided to go with the 970 Evo Plus. It's only $15 more than the Kingston and although it's probably just a one off dud don't want to take the risk of their being an incompatibility.

    • Good choice. Whilst some will say there have been changes to 970 Evo+ over the years with different controller/etc… in all honesty though, for your Mum's likely use case of day to day productivity/normal computing, I think it's a good match.
