This review sold it to me…

It makes you feel superior to those who are sadly bound to the lesser world of "Fast" charging. In fact, it's kind of like stepping up from being a Platinum VIP to being a Diamond VIP.

        Here's the real deal

I wonder if that sort of rapid charging degrades the batteries more quickly.

        • I believe this is the first thing raised by anyone within xiaomi.
It's actually using smarter method of battery charging
          https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/10/22666347/xiaomi-11t-pro-1…

          • @OzBestDeal: Yup that dual-battery method isn't new, but charging 2 batteries at 120W (so 60W per battery) is. That's a high charge rate for a phone battery.

The article misquotes the Xiaomi rep, or the Xiaomi rep got it wrong when they say "everything is done at 20 amperes". That would require extremely thick cables. It's actually 20 volts at 6 amps.

If it really has no ill effects on batteries (of course Xiaomi would say so ;), then hopefully everyone else implements it in the future. USB PD can already do 100W today and 240W with PD 2.1. Samsung will probably be more conservative after their Note 7 battery incident though.

For anyone that's got around the S21/+/Ultra deals the last few days, there's very few third party chargers that support Samsung's implementation of 25W charging - most will only support 15W.

    More detail here:

  • So what's 'travel' about it?

    • Basically designed to be a spare, jb hifi still sell the older 15w model at my local

    • It's small and light. Many people might be used to the 6 port desktop style chargers that are not suitable for travel.

    Is this AU plug?

If the model number is accurate, yes.

    same price in samsung store.

    • +1

Free shipping if you have prime though

      • Free shipping with Samsung too.

  • Any suggestions on which cable to get for this?

    • Any USB-C to C cable will be fine.

      • +1

is there any difference with "fast charging" USB C to USB C cables. Some say 60W or 100W and others say 5A

I just found my own answer

The 100W cable has thicker wires to allow it to transmit a current of 5A. (5A * 20V =100W).

The 60W cable can only handle 3A, so up top 60W at 20V.

The 100W cable can do everything the 60W cable can, but it may be a bit more expensive, and bigger / thicker, because it simply needs to have more copper.

Your choice should be based on what your charging needs are; if you have a laptop that has a charger <60W, or you have a phone that needs usb-c fast charging via PPS at more than 3A, go for the 100W cable, otherwise, the 60W one will do fine.

        • +1

FYI, this specific charger does not output over 3A.

          From the specs:
          Output Current (Max, Fast Charge)
          PDO : 2.77 A(9 V) / PPS : 3.0 A(3.3-5.9 V) or 2.25 A(3.3-11.0 V)

I disagree. I own an S10 and have purchased a few USB C cables over the years, and can say not all support fast charging, not normal charging for that matter.

Using the same samsung charger on ~1% battery, I get 1.5 hours for samsung provided/compatible cables, and it goes to 3.5-4.5 hours for non-supported cables.

I'd say those slow-charging cables you bought weren't made well. They could have really thin power wires inside, or are too long for the wire size. Or the plug has been damaged or worn.

There probably should be a qualifier in OP's statement - any properly-made C to C cable should be fine.

          • @eug: Fair enough. I did get the latest one (literally just this afternoon) from AusPost, for all that's worth.

            And they were $19.99 too!

            • @sh4hp: Properly made is definitely a requirement. I used to have issues with cheaper USB-A cables before I started buying more reputable ones.

I would largely avoid Auspost and most other physical stores.

I'm using a few different 60w cables (Baseus, Samsung, Apple, etc) and haven't had a problem with PD or PPS chargers when used with my S20FE.

    Cheaper here - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002280579494.html?spm=a2…

I have this and its original. And it charges my S21 ultra at 25W. Shows super fast charging

      cheers

edit: no AU plug though, gonna search around for the EP-TA845 which is the 45W model

How do you tell? Fakes can look pretty convincing, and a PSU isn't something I'd want a fake of.

@eug: Fakes wouldn't show up on phone as super fast charging. 25W requires USB C PD PPS protocol which cheap fakes doesn't implement

            • @InternetExplorer: PPS is an open standard and available on cheaper chargers. I don't think proves things one way or another.

Here's a video comparing a real and fake 25w charger, you'll notice they both do "super fast charging"

            • @InternetExplorer:

Fakes wouldn't show up on phone as super fast charging. 25W requires USB C PD PPS protocol which cheap fakes doesn't implement

The PPS protocol is just software negotiation so nothing prevents anyone from implementing it if they wanted to.

You can even download the spec yourself and make it at home, or just take the code from this opensource project. The FUSB302BMPX USB controller chip that does the negotiation costs US$0.58 in 1000 quantities, even cheaper if they've cloned it.

I'm not saying it's definitely fake, I was just wondering what made you certain it was original because Aliexpress is known for selling clones at cheaper prices.

e.g. this Magsafe charger looks genuine, but when you look at the photos posted in the reviews, some have a typo on the label - "Hollyhill In dustrial Estate" - while others don't. The boxes and items look genuine, but you'd think a company with a strong focus on aesthetics would know how to spell the name of their distribution centre, which makes it kinda sus.

            • @InternetExplorer: As mentioned PPS is merely a sub standard of PD Charging. I have a 66w wotobe car charger that I bought for $10. Shows super fast charging and verified 25w by a UM34. It's not that rare to see pps on cheapie chargers

  • Will this work on a Switch?

    • Yes

    • Yes, but not as efficient. Using the switch charger vs this, it's roughly 20% less efficient. So it takes 2 hours on this, and 1.5 hours on switch charger.

I think it has something to do with the switch IC detecting a non-switch charger or something.

  • I just upgrade my s21 to Android 12. Super fast charger stopped working. It shows percentage and time to full charge but doesn't charge any more. Any one had the same issue after software upgrade?

  • +1

Same price at official Samsung store

  • It is the same price + Free Delivery and in stock in the Samsung Education store.

  • Does this work with Fold 3?

    • Yep and tab s7 plus

  • Purchasing one for my Google Pixel 6 as it can only really charge at around 23w not 30w as they claim. Does the job for more than half the price.

    • Does the job for more than half the price.

I think you meant less than half the Google 30W price, cf. $45.

But nah, this will charge the Pixel 6s, of course, but the Google 30W will charge them much faster than this Samsung 25W, albeit at less than 30W. Chalk and cheese, really
